My little Pit is a mix so he may not count in your book, but he is brown and black ( brindle-ish) and white on the head and neck.

Has anyone ever put their dog on Prozac for seperation anxiety?
I have a 15mth old Neapolitan Bullmastiff. She destroys everything when left alone. U can't leave her in a crate because she can get out, regardless of how it's locked. She has eaten holes in the walls, tore chunks out of the drywall around door facings, etc...This behavior did not start until last summer when we went on a 4day vacation. My brother was supposed to take care of her, and didn't do a very good job. Since then, she goes nuts when we get our keys, leave her site, etc... She has no behavior problems however when we are at home with her, other than she likes to check and make sure you're still there. Homeopathic process has not worked. Can not do behavior program due to there being 5 of us and I'm the only 1 willing to try it. Our vet is putting her on Prozac to help her. Has anyone else used it? How long does it take to work? Does it leave your dog dopey or will they still want to play, just have a lower stress level? I appreciate all help and any info. u can give

My vet also recommended Prozac for my dog when he had separation anxiety. I opted not to give it to him, however I heard it works really well.
Instead I showered him with attention when I was home. When I left the house at first, I would leave for only 5 minutes. When you go back in the house praise, praise, praise (if the dog has not destroyed anything). Reward with treats.
Then I slowly increased the time that I would wait outside. If you go back in, or hear through the door that the dog is into something, use your best disappointed voice and do not reward. However never hit the dog!
Dogs have to be "punished" very quickly after an incident, otherwise they don't know what they're being punished for. For example, if you leave at 2pm, the dog rips the couch at 4pm, and you don't get home until 7pm, the dog won't know what you're mad about. He forgot about the couch hours ago.
This method worked for me and my dog was pretty bad when we got him. However it took a lot of effort. You may want to combine this method with the Prozac.

I bought a puppy from Todd Howard @ bigbulldogs.com. I found out 2 months after I bought my pup that he was from Hungary and he was shipped to the USA at approximately 5 weeks old. Has anyone else had the same problem with bigbulldogs.com?

He is an import broker. He orders puppies from puppymills in Europe (mainly Hungary, Ukraine, and Russia) and then resells them in the US. Most of the puppies that he gets come from puppymills in those countries, even though they will say that they are reputable breeders. I drives me nuts that he has a little blurb on his page about scamming, but yet he buys from puppymills. He always has puppies available, and there is no way that he could have that many if he bred them himself (unless he was a puppymill).
I considered purchasing a French Bulldog puppy from him a few years ago, but I decided to go with a breeder that was closer to where I was located since I do not believe in shipping puppies. Also, I though that it was a little fishy that he could not provide me with pictures of the parents of the puppy that I was wanting to get, nor was he willing to provide pedigrees (I was told to just "take his word for it").

Given that the website specifies breeders in California, you can probably report them to the Better Business bureau for having provided inaccurate information.
Was your puppy defective in any way? If not, then the seller took the risk of his untimely shipment, and unless the seller gave you pedigree details, then you can have no complaints.
However, if the pup is ill, or the seller told you that his bulldogs were the parents, showed you pictures of the parents, etc. that is an illegal transaction, deserving of a police complaint for fraud.
California has a puppy lemon law, so the buyer is protected against buying puppies under 8 weeks, or with serious illness..You can contact your local Humane Society, or go online and search 'puppy lemon law, ca' to learn of your rights.
I looked on the site, and although he offers stud service, and claims to be a breeder, he doesn't do as most breeders will do, and post the parent's names of the puppies offered, or any other info, except the picture.
If you didn't visit the kennel to meet mom and dad, then that is always the risk you take..
If there are problems rather than just the ethics of the deal, then you can pursue the above recourse.
Notice on his website,, there is no mention of his facilities, no pics of the kennels, or the dogs indoors, no pedigrees, no claim of genetic testing, no show records of any kind..I see nothing illegal from this angle...His site also reads just like Europpuppy..So I am assuming he borrowed from their site..They (europuppy) actually have a good reputation for delivering healthy pups from overseas..But they are very upfront with letting you know exactly where the puppy is coming from.
Edit: another RED FLAG is they are called, 'English Bulldog' on his site, The AKC and UKC, and Canadian KC all define the breed as 'Bulldog'..no 'English' on it..when you see them advertised as English bulldogs, they are looking for the uneducated buyer> http://www.akc.org/breeds/bulldog/...

The person would give him water and food for the entire day, take him out, clean out the wee wee pads. It's just so expensive to put him in doggie day care, wondering what the problems would be.

Having a petsitter is great choice, but they should make more than one trip a day...at least two. When I petsit, I go 4 times a day.
Some things to consider...
Make sure you have numbers to your family vet and emergency clinic in case of problems.
Make sure your petsitter has very clear instructions on what to do in case of emergency, even for serious, life threatening situations.
Make sure you leave numbers you can be reached.
Call your family vet and let them know you are leaving, and if there is an emergency what you want them to do.
People usually do not prepare for emergencies and the petsitters are often faced with very difficult decisions when something goes wrong. Talk about finances, talk about CPR...it is not a good subject, but if there is a problem, you will be glad you did.

Whenever my husband and I leave town for more than a few hours say a week we ask my mom, grandma or brother to come let the dogs out at noon and before they go to bed but they usually stay over and sleep there. They house sit as well as dog sit. Just make sure to tell them not to forget your dog outside if your dog is an inside dog or doesn't have a dog house outside. Also have them not open the front door or your dog will get out. No matter how good a dog he is, he is STILL a dog and freedom trumps snacks and shelter. glgl mzz
depends on your dog. if you let him out often this will confuse and possible mess up his schedule. i would suggest finding him a home somewhere for the week that you are gone and give the caretaker like 50-$100 for their time.
I've never done it, but my friend went over 3 times a day for 5 days to her friends house to take care of her two cats, two turtles, and two mini poodles. It worked fine, but make sure they have enough time with the person who comes to visit them for their personal needs.
He'll need to go out more than once a day and he'll be lonely.(He's only a baby) May be have some one spend the week with him,like a relative or close friend.Or a least have some one come over 3 time a day.
Well leaving it home alone can be very boring for it. Sometimes dogs and cats go into depression and dont eat at all. Then when you get home they have died of starvation. I think the babysitter thing is okay but have them come 3 times a day.

Also close off as many rooms as possible to avoid destructive habits. Buy some nylabones or kongs and instruct the person to give one each time he/she leaves.
Don't feed your dog once a day, he/she will get bloat and die, especially painful if untreated and left alone(because he/she was only checked on once a day)
Sorry but leaving a dog home all day and have someone come by only once a day just isn't right. The dog or pup will be in the crate too long. You will come home to a very depressed dog or pup or a very sick one.
Find other arrangements or see if you can get someone to come by 2 times each day to at least walk the dog and play with it.
If you cant do this then find a kennel or a pet hotel to board your dog.
Dogs need to get more exercise than that. See if you can get two people to come by, once in the morning to walk him (they need about 45 minutes of good exercise each day) and one in the evening to feed him and take him out again. As long as it's only for a week, that should be sufficient.
((to answer if 1x a day is ok- here's a challenge to you..
go to the bathroom 1x in the morning, then try holding it for the rest of the day. (Drink normally). lets see how you fair with that 1 out time you think is adequate))
the reputable pet sitters have Vets they go to if there is an emergency- know animal and human CPR, and specialize in caring for animals.
They will come by 3x a day to walk, feed and make sure there's plenty of fresh water.
It also offers comfort to the pet being able to stay at home.
however you will
1. want a reputable pet sitter with references. After all, you're letting them have a key to your house. Insist on talking to current or past clients.
2. They can charge a bit more. The more reputable they are, the more their services cost.
however, I still didn't pay that much for the sitter.
now if you're going to have a friend do it...
make sure the friend is reliable. My grandma left my cousin in charge of her dog when she came to visit us... when we brought her back, her dog was dehydrated, had no water for days, old food and needed serious vet bills.
We made my grandma bring the dog with her to our house ever since then. We were disgusted with my cousin and never forgave her.
so make sure your friend is trust worthy.
if he/she is... there's no problem with doing this.

dogs need to urinate up to 5 times a day- 3x is the bare minimum they should get out.
and they need to go on walkies and have some attention time.

This is acceptable for an adult dog, but for a puppy it is stressful. If the puppy is younger than 16 weeks definitely no.
Some owners have left pups like this as old as 6 months and found that the puppy somehow escaped confinement and chewed cords, ate rat poison, got into chocolate ect.
the price of vacation should include the price of boarding someplace where the dog is talked to,walked,stimulated mentally and shown affection as well as the food and water. how well would you do home alone with a stranger coming in once a day to take care of you?

I actually have a neighbor of mine that brings me their dog when they go for a few days. He stays here with my two dogs and they get along great. I use to go up to there house and take him out a few times a day and feed him and play with him walk him etc.. Till around 9 at night would be the last potty break for the night. It worked out great and well bringing him here now works even better. So he's not up at the house all day and lonely in between. I would hope you have someone come over more than once a day though that wouldn't' be enough in a days time for a dog to be let out or fed etc.. But it works great. I know what you mean about day care that can get costly. But yes make sure it's someone you can trust and know. So you know the dog will be fed and taken out etc.. and not just left alone the whole time your gone.
Once a day is not enough time to be let out for a puppy please keep that in mind. How can you expect a puppy to only be let out once the whole 24hrs a day thats askin quite a bit for a little puppy.
working at a dog kennel i can see your point of how much it costs. most kennels like ours offer prices by weight and some will mail you your bill. leaving a dog or puppy at home can have many risks. the dog could severely tear up or eat something he or she is not supposed to. even if someone comes once a day, say for an hour or so, the dog will only get let out for potty once a day and wont be properly supervised. another problem is separation anxiety, or even proper temperature controls. unless you have a 12 - 24 hour babysitter i would suggest looking into dog kennels around your area and even tour places to find the most suitable.
yes, all the time! Your dog will prefer being home rather than in a kennel anyways, he's familiar with his home, a kennel is a scary place for a dog. Your dog will be happy and content until you come home, just make sure it's someone responsible looking after him!
I own a Dogwalking %26 Pet Care service business %26 I feel that a 1X a day visit is simply not enough, especially not for a puppy. You don't need to put him in daycare, but do some research for dogwalkers in your area. Most walkers will gladly schedule you for 2-3 visits a day while your away, %26 maybe even give you some type of discount (if you inquire.) If this still ends up being too much $$, call the Veteranarians in your area. Many are set up for boarding %26 it tends to be much less $$ than a doggie daycare. They'll also have someone there for him 24/7, though there may not be as much individual attention given to your pup as there would be with a higher $$ service.
That is a very long time for a dog, and just way too long for a puppy. They sleep a lot ,but just imagine if he thinks its another day every time he wakes up. He will cry so much he could possibly get sick or have real problems for the rest of his life. An old dog might be okay but I don't reccomend this for any dog. If your neighbor could take him for a big walk, and maybe even for a short visit to his house for an hour or so. It may give the dog something to look forward to, but this is not a good situation at all. Could you possibly find a dog sitter to come and stay with him every other day? Why can't you take the dog along? I wish I lived in your neighborhood I would keep him for you. Have you tried an ad like dog babysitter? Then ask if they would take your dog to their house. Good Luck Please try tio find a better arrangement. Never leave a puppy for a week.

I use to go up to there house and take him out a few times a day and feed him and play with him walk him etc.. Till around 9 at night would be the last potty break for the night. It worked out great and well bringing him here now works even better. So he's not up at the house all day and lonely in between. I would hope you have someone come over more than once a day though that wouldn't' be enough in a days time for a dog to be let out or fed etc.. But it works great. I know what you mean about day care that can get costly. But yes make sure it's someone you can trust and know. So you know the dog will be fed and taken out etc.. and not just left alone the whole time your gone.
Once a day is not enough time to be let out for a puppy please keep that in mind. How can you expect a puppy to only be let out once the whole 24hrs a day thats askin quite a bit for a little puppy.
working at a dog kennel i can see your point of how much it costs. most kennels like ours offer prices by weight and some will mail you your bill. leaving a dog or puppy at home can have many risks. the dog could severely tear up or eat something he or she is not supposed to. even if someone comes once a day, say for an hour or so, the dog will only get let out for potty once a day and wont be properly supervised. another problem is separation anxiety, or even proper temperature controls. unless you have a 12 - 24 hour babysitter i would suggest looking into dog kennels around your area and even tour places to find the most suitable.
yes, all the time! Your dog will prefer being home rather than in a kennel anyways, he's familiar with his home, a kennel is a scary place for a dog. Your dog will be happy and content until you come home, just make sure it's someone responsible looking after him!
I own a Dogwalking %26 Pet Care service business %26 I feel that a 1X a day visit is simply not enough, especially not for a puppy. You don't need to put him in daycare, but do some research for dogwalkers in your area. Most walkers will gladly schedule you for 2-3 visits a day while your away, %26 maybe even give you some type of discount (if you inquire.) If this still ends up being too much $$, call the Veteranarians in your area. Many are set up for boarding %26 it tends to be much less $$ than a doggie daycare. They'll also have someone there for him 24/7, though there may not be as much individual attention given to your pup as there would be with a higher $$ service.
That is a very long time for a dog, and just way too long for a puppy. They sleep a lot ,but just imagine if he thinks its another day every time he wakes up. He will cry so much he could possibly get sick or have real problems for the rest of his life. An old dog might be okay but I don't reccomend this for any dog. If your neighbor could take him for a big walk, and maybe even for a short visit to his house for an hour or so. It may give the dog something to look forward to, but this is not a good situation at all. Could you possibly find a dog sitter to come and stay with him every other day? Why can't you take the dog along? I wish I lived in your neighborhood I would keep him for you. Have you tried an ad like dog babysitter? Then ask if they would take your dog to their house. I have given her dosage in the past and found out that I was giving her too much. I have started again recently, giving her the proper amount according to her vet. She is a very large (not fat) Golden Retriever, so he said to give her 1500 mg per day (split 750 twice a day). She refused to eat this morning and still had not eaten when my husband checked on her at lunch - that is not like her at all. She is also very lethargic. My first intuition is to stop the Glucosamine again, but I don't want her joints to go bad. She is only 8 years old.

The dog belonged to a homeless guy who lived in the park. It was absolutely hilarious! It looked like a chihuahua on steroids! I would say it was slightly larger than a normal sized chihuahua, but it was heavily muscled. I don't know which parent was which, but I think it could go either way if both were willing.

I would suggest a male, females are really independent and tend to not be as completely loyal as males.

Has anyone ever had any bad experiences with Nature's Variety Raw Instinct or Canidae dog food?
I recently switched from NUTRO Ultra brand dog food, to a mix of Nature's Variety- Raw Instinct (Grain free) and Canidae. I did this b/c Nutro had several of their canned foods on the Recall List, and I prefer not to do business with a Company that outsources to China, and uses chemicals to beef up their protein. Anyway, I tried to do research on the two new companies, and saw nothing but good stuff, but I want to know if anyone has had any bad experiences with them. (Natures Variety sounds awesome b/c it contains absolutely no grains, and Canidae b/c it is holistic/human grade)
My dog is eating it, so he likes it, but he's not really picky. He's had some runny poo, but nothing major.

I'd had my 3 dachshunds on Canidae (doing fine) but decided to try the Raw Instinct as one of them (Samson) has had chronic problems with grass allergies, diarrhea, even HGE in the past. After doing my research, I thought that perhaps the grain free product might be even better for him.
I did do a gradual switch over the period of 7-8 days.
All three absolutely loved the food.
Once they were on 100% Raw Instinct however, Samson had a two-day bout of diarrhea and I ended up (after the water, chicken %26 rice etc diet) putting him back on Canidae.
The other two had no problems with the Raw Instinct and finished off the 20# bag, then they went back on Canidae as well. In our case, I learned that if it ain't broke don't fix it. And it's easier to have just one product in the house that serves for all three dogs.
I still believe Raw Instinct is a good product, it was just not right for Sam and his funny tummy. We have many customers who swear by it for their pets.
I recently switched my dogs to Canidae too, from Nutro large breed. I switched for the same reasons. One of my goldens had minor loose stools but the other one had a bit of the runs. We found a puppy and have been keeping him and he is about 15 weeks old. I noticed last week that he has splotches on his front legs and a few other places on his body. I have an appointment with the vet on Tues. I am worried about the expense. Does anyone have any idea of the cost to treat mange?

Hi! I actually work as a Vet Assistant. You will end up paying for an exam.. Of course.. We'll guess between $25 and $40.. Depends on the clinic.. They will do a skin scrape.. Basically, what that is, is a scraping of the skin and they will look under the microscope to determine the type of mange. In most cases of mange, that I've seen was Demodex. Demodex live in the pores. If thats what it is, they will give you a special balm to rub on it.. Don't worry, you won't catch it... You're looking to spend no more than $20 for that.. BUT, it works wonders and goes a long way... They may want you to bathe him in medicated shampoo.. No more than $10. I hope this helped! Good luck with your puppy!!

There are two different types of mange. One is demadectic and it isn't contagious to humans. It is generally gotten by pups because their immune systems aren't completely developed. That pup needs special baths every 2 to 3 weeks for probably 3 baths t get rid of that mange. The second type of mange is sarcoptic and that is basically scabies and it contagious to human and other animals. These animals need special baths and possible medications. A vet can tell the difference. I think you need to call around to different vets for prices. Prices vary so much in different parts of the country. In any city the prices will be higher, out in the country where over head is less, the service will be less.
The infected areas feel like tons of mosquito bites and you can't stop itching, and you itch till you bleed. Try bathing him with the best you have and try putting some aloe vera on the infected spots till he sees the vet. It shouldn't be that expensive. Their just going to bathe him to relieve the itching and scaley skin and give him some anti-biotics. He's just a puppy, his whole world is you right now and he just wants it to stop. I recently found a purebred irish setter with severe infected allergies in 'both' ears. My sister and i came up with the $90 to get him treated cuz he needed immediate care and luckily found the owner and he repaid us. But the dog was out of misery and thats all the poor thing cared about. Good luck!

Has anyone elses dog had heart worms?
If so, can you please tell me what to expect. My dog went for his regular 1 year check up yesterday and the results came back today that he's heart worm positive. I have to bring him in tomorrow morning for more blood tests.

Don't get worried yet. If your dog wasn't positive last year, he hasn't progressed very far in the disease. There are four stages of heartworm disease, one and two being the easiest to treat. There are a few different ways to treat this, but your vet will take an xray to determine what stage he is. Once he determines that, he will give you a suggested course of treatment. If by chance he advises you to do the arsenic injections, you will have to keep your dog extremely quiet with no activity at all for about four weeks. The reason for this is that the arsenic will kill the worms in the heart and activity may cause pieces of worms to break off into the blood stream. That would not be a good thing. Lots of dogs have done just fine with this. Just make sure you follow all your vets instructions meticulously. In future, he may also suggest that your dog take heartworm medication every month to prevent further infection.
my dog had 1 treatment after I found out and she lived for about 7 more years. Everything went fine for her. She ended up being 14 when she died.

A friend was given a beautiful Doberman. The owners didn't tell him she had tested positive for hearworm. (We found out from checking with their vet. They didn't want the expense of treatment!) We found out during her exam and had her treated. Everything turned out great. She's a beautiful happy dog today.

If you cannot afford $10 mo for heartworm prevention then you do not need the dog. Heartworms are very serious and with a VERY expensive treatment began immediately, there is still a very small chance of recovery and it is very hard on the dog. The best thing to do is to discuss your options with your vet once it has been determined the severity of his case. Good luck to you.
it is hard but with recent advancements it can be manageable. A lot depends on how early they caught it. It can be fairly expensive $500 - $2000 depending on how bad and the treatment. It will be hard on your dog and he will have to stay at the vet for a few days for treatments. You have to keep them calm and dont stress them out.
I know several dogs personally that came through with flying colors. One of my employee's dogs is currently being treated. My heart goes out to you and your puppy.

i have never had a dog with heart worms but i did work at an animal hospital for a few years and i saw a lot of cases of it. your dog will most likely be just fine as long as you follow your veterinarians advice. the treatment can be quite expensive though but definitely worth it. once your veterinarian does chest x-rays and lab work to determine if your dog is healthy enough to undergo the treatment then he or she will have you drop him off for the day and your dog will get an injection of ivermectin. he will be pretty sore at the injection site and might feel crummy for a day or two but after that, he'll be back to his normal self. once he comes home from the veterinarian's, you have to keep him as calm as possible. talk him out on a leash to use the restroom (don't just let him out in the yard to run around) and don't play fetch with him or anything. keep him as relaxed as possible. the dangerous part of the treatment is when the heart worms start dying, that is when he is most susceptible to having a heart attack, that's why it is so important to keep him calm. then you have to give him heart worm preventative every single month so he doesn't get infected with them again. good luck, i can imagine you are pretty worried.

Don't get worried yet. If your dog wasn't positive last year, he hasn't progressed very far in the disease. There are four stages of heartworm disease, one and two being the easiest to treat. There are a few different ways to treat this, but your vet will take an xray to determine what stage he is. Once he determines that, he will give you a suggested course of treatment. If by chance he advises you to do the arsenic injections, you will have to keep your dog extremely quiet with no activity at all for about four weeks. The reason for this is that the arsenic will kill the worms in the heart and activity may cause pieces of worms to break off into the blood stream. That would not be a good thing. Lots of dogs have done just fine with this. Just make sure you follow all your vets instructions meticulously. In future, he may also suggest that your dog take heartworm medication every month to prevent further infection.
my dog had 1 treatment after I found out and she lived for about 7 more years. Everything went fine for her. She ended up being 14 when she died.

A friend was given a beautiful Doberman. The owners didn't tell him she had tested positive for hearworm. (We found out from checking with their vet. They didn't want the expense of treatment!) We found out during her exam and had her treated. Everything turned out great. She's a beautiful happy dog today.

If you cannot afford $10 mo for heartworm prevention then you do not need the dog. Heartworms are very serious and with a VERY expensive treatment began immediately, there is still a very small chance of recovery and it is very hard on the dog. The best thing to do is to discuss your options with your vet once it has been determined the severity of his case. Good luck to you.
it is hard but with recent advancements it can be manageable. A lot depends on how early they caught it. It can be fairly expensive $500 - $2000 depending on how bad and the treatment. It will be hard on your dog and he will have to stay at the vet for a few days for treatments. You have to keep them calm and dont stress them out.
I know several dogs personally that came through with flying colors. One of my employee's dogs is currently being treated. My heart goes out to you and your puppy.

People treat animals with so little respect and they are after all living breathing creatures so they deserve better.

We can probably all agree that spaying and neutering is responsable and the only way to cure the pet overpopluation problem. However, to ride someone asking a question about mating siblings about the responsibilites of spaying and neutering is just silly! Do they honestly think any dog owner older than two isn't going to know they should have their dogs fixed? Do they think the person asking the question is going to care what they think about their fitness as a "pet parent"? This was my first time here and because of the snotty nature of these posters it could be my last! Makes me think twice about posting or even visiting this site. Plenty of other question and answer sites out there!

Have you ever noticed how many irresponsible pet owners ask questions they should already know the answers to BEFORE they get a pet or breed a pet? People on here asking questions when they should be on the way to the vet. Puppies suffering because people who bred their female do not know how to care for them or the mother. People buying dogs from breeders who will sell them at 5 weeks of age and younger. So many questions are very disturbing. You can't help but scream at someone to please hurry and get a clue.

I have a male Shiht-zu and I have dyed him from pink, blue to green with kool-aid. Before he was a very shy dog, but when he was dyed, he got a lot of attention and really liked it. So the ones that say it takes away their self esteem are wrong. He digged the attention. And as far as him being pink, he was secure enough in his masculinity that he pulled if off exquisitely.

Has anyone delt with Kennel cough with their dog? What did you do to treat it.?
I had boarded her and she didnt have the shot to prevent it, so the vet gave her one. Well she has it now, she didnt have enough time for the shot to work.

This normally kicks the cough in the butt. In some cases, it doesnt and then your vet should give you a stronger antibiotic called zithromax or azithromycin; enough for about 5 days. This has always worked in my experience.

They have a great reputation for treating the dogs very well. It's a good site to go on if you're looking for a very specific dog, such as a four year old male terrier who can live in an apartment and is good with kids. The more detail you put into the site, the better. I was just browsing the site when I wanted to get a dog because I didn't care the age, breed, or sex, and it was a lot harder to find a match. I didn't end up getting a dog from them for that reason.
I got my my German shepherd mix off petfinder.com. She is the most amazing dog I've ever had. It a great place to look because it is all dogs in local shelters in need of a good home.
Well I know tons of family and friends who found their dogs on Petfinder and I have found great dogs on there. My brother got both his huskies, my sister got her boxer and chow and my other brother found his Shepherd there. It is just an on line resource to locate excellent dogs from dfferent shelters and groups from all over. It is a great way to find a dog.

I got a 6 week old mixed breed, shipped halfway across the country by an excellent shelter in MS (Corinth-Alcorn Humane Society). He is clean and healthy and has a terrific temperament. I would recommend trying to find a puppy that has not a) been abused or b) gone without food.
my sister did and that dog was a nightmare she got totally duped by the shelter cause he had a laundry list of things wrong with him . she ended up giving him to a rescue and she told the rescue what all was wrong with him and they still manage to place him . I am glad they placed him but she swore to me that she would never get another dog from petfinders . so instead she got one from the pound a little pomerainian and they are happily ever after . I am glad it turned out okay .

if you have, could you please explain to me why you made that decision? Did you know that these puppies are from puppy mills? Are poorly bred? And will most likely have health issues when they get older?

I have known many people who have boughten from pet stores.
1. they have had serious health problems as they got older. Some even before they got too old.
2. They do buy from puppy mills or "dog industries" which is a nicer name for a puppy mill.
if you notice when one dog is sold another dog replaces it practically the next day?
a normal breeder will not have the ability to restock the petstores that quickly. So they have to go to a mass breeder, puppy mill where they have puppies on hand, all year round, and enough to pick and choose from so the pet store has a "variety of dogs to offer" breed wise.
they wouldn't be able to do this without a puppy mill / mass breeder type setting.
I'd avoid pet store puppies as cute as they can be.
check the humane society or find a reputable breeder.
this isn't a slam to a petstore buyer- its the pet store, not the pet store buyer... but it is the truth.
I had a dog who lived to be 17... my friend had the same breed from a pet store that lived to be 10 and was constantly at the vet with health problems.
pet stores are not equip to handle the needs of puppies and sometimes puppies are not given enough play time, personal time, so on.
petstore puppies are also not always given the proper diet or feeding requirements.
many dogs they get are also too young to be separated from their moms which is what causes the health problems that they have.
I saw a dog that they claimed to be 6 weeks old (Which in itself is too young... and illegal in some states...) but I think it was younger than that even based on size, girth and teeth.
That's really not a fair question- quit trying to guilt people who got a dog from a pet shop.
People do not know about puppy mills, at least I hope that is the reason. It is up to the rest of us to educate them about what puppymills are and how they work hand in hand with petstores.
I have never bought a puppy from a petshop, but I think the majority of people that do really don't know where the puppies come from. I have seen multiple people say they got their puppy from a petshop and at the time, they had no idea what puppymills even were (and these people also vowed never to buy a petshop puppy again after they learned what the poor animals go through).
I was a 12 year old with an attitude and wanted a dog right then, right there. 6 years later I have a 6 year old Pekingese pup who made those 6 years VERY long! My mother didnt know about puppymills and to this day shes still all 'i dont care' about them, but now that I do .. of course I feel bad about buying him. I recently bought a 2nd dog and went to a VERY good breeder and checked out their facilty and everything.
Gizmo, my petstore dog, is 6 years old. Hes aggressive towards everyone outside of me and my mother. Chews on the ends of his blankets (a sign he was taken away from his mother too young), has an underbite/overbite, and had a hernia when we bought him, and also has a deformed rib. I LOVE gizmo, he was my first dog and will always have my heart. So far, hes very healthy and I'm SO greatful for that. He is on a good quality food (Innova) and is doing very well minus his puppymill faults.
He may go his whole life without having any health issues (minus the ones that come w/ old age), or maybe he will have health issues. But I was one of the lucky ones who petstore pup didnt die of parvo in a week.
So yes, my dog is a puppymill dog but I dont love him anyless than my good breeder dog. I learned from my mistake. Now I'M the one educating about puppymills at my local shelter.

My family once made the horrible mistake of buying a boxer puppy from Debby's PetLand. Less than 3 weeks after we got her, she died of heart problems. We did not do the proper research, and had no clue where these puppy's came from. All we saw were the adorable puppies pacing around in their little cages, and wanted to take her home. We ended up paying a large amount of money in medical bills, and after Debby's refused to reimburse us my mother had to threaten to bring this story to the media. But no sum of money can replace the emotional termoil we have been through.
Why me made the decision to buy from a pet shop? I guess we simply only saw the outside of the puppy --- the adorable eyes, floppy ears... --- and didn't even bother thinking about what may be going on inside of her... all of the medical issues that may come along with poorly bred puppies, bred in a puppy mill. And I'm sure it's the same with many other people. Like my family, a lot of people probably just think of taking these puppies home, and do not think ahead to the medical problems and emotional pain that lays ahead.

I have known many people who have boughten from pet stores.
1. they have had serious health problems as they got older. Some even before they got too old.
2. They do buy from puppy mills or "dog industries" which is a nicer name for a puppy mill.
if you notice when one dog is sold another dog replaces it practically the next day?
a normal breeder will not have the ability to restock the petstores that quickly. So they have to go to a mass breeder, puppy mill where they have puppies on hand, all year round, and enough to pick and choose from so the pet store has a "variety of dogs to offer" breed wise.
they wouldn't be able to do this without a puppy mill / mass breeder type setting.
I'd avoid pet store puppies as cute as they can be.
check the humane society or find a reputable breeder.
this isn't a slam to a petstore buyer- its the pet store, not the pet store buyer... but it is the truth.
I had a dog who lived to be 17... my friend had the same breed from a pet store that lived to be 10 and was constantly at the vet with health problems.
pet stores are not equip to handle the needs of puppies and sometimes puppies are not given enough play time, personal time, so on.
petstore puppies are also not always given the proper diet or feeding requirements.
many dogs they get are also too young to be separated from their moms which is what causes the health problems that they have.
I saw a dog that they claimed to be 6 weeks old (Which in itself is too young... and illegal in some states...) but I think it was younger than that even based on size, girth and teeth.
That's really not a fair question- quit trying to guilt people who got a dog from a pet shop.

Has anybody had a dog live long when diagnosed with metastasize mammary carcinoma?
My lovely girl had a operation to remove a lump last week in her breast. She had not been ill at all and the lump was very small. We only noticed the problem as her teat started to bleed. I got her results two days ago and they say it is a metastasize mammary carcinoma. Bonnie is only five and was spayed when she was about 3 years. The operation has really been hard on her and us as she was so well before.My vet says it will travel to her lungs and theres nothing we can do.Please let me know if you have had this experience.I cant bear the thought of losing my girl.

Has anybody ever used Bil Jac dog food?

There is a bil-jac plant near my hospital, whenever it rains everything stinks like dog food, but anyway back to the point. I have some clients who use it but with less than stellar results. Now is a tricky time due to all the contaminations but considering it from a health standpoint you will likely feed more food using bil-jac. Federal regulations stipulate how much protien food must contain, however they don't specifiy from where or how digestable it must be. There for cheaper foods use cheaper protien sources thereby requiring the dog to eat more food to get what they need, which they will do. Higher quality foods require smaller amounts of food to be fed.

Has any CoonHound Owners noticed that when they are on the trail their other senses dim?
When I walk my Bluetick coonhound he loves to smell the ground. I know that he is scenting anything that walked that way ine last day at least. I have seen him so keen on the trail of a squirrel that he didn't see the actual squirrel less than 3 feet away! I am just wondering if this is something specific to my dog or if other hound owners have seen this happen.

Handled Wayward Kids Badly?
I was out with my son and our large Belgian Shepherd dog the other day and whilst my (3 year old) son and I were wrestling I saw three of the children from our council estate approach us. These kids are not particularly bad, but they're the kids whose parents don't know or care where they are.
Well, they came right up to us and pointed to our dog. He's a big pup and was on his looong training line at the time.
"What is it?" asked one.
"HE is a Belgian Shepherd." I replied, emphasising the "He". My tone was annoyed as I really didn't want them to be there near us in the park at all.
"How old is it?" the same kid asked.
"He's a living thing." I replied, more annoyed, "The ball there is an 'it'."
They thought about that then another asked if they could pet him. I agreed. Another kid kept me talking and next thing I knew one of them had the football out of our bag and was about to kick it.

A typical stereotypical approach to what u describe as 'wayward' kids. To be stereotypical is human and we all hold certain views despite trying not to. The children you describe did nothing against you initially (or throughout the situation you describe) and yet immediately you had an 'annoyed' tone to your voice simply because they said 'it' and not 'he'. Its obvious you want to change your attitude and in future I would recommend that you give these kids a break, it seems in our society that once mud has been thrown it sticks, and no-one will go out of their way to try and change this and give people a go!
Well done for admitting this and trying to change your attitude, just stop and think next time and give them a break after all the children are our future!

even thought the kids might of thought you were annoying, you handled them alright. they shouldnt be so rude and you are a great parent. i have a friend who's parents didnt teach her many respectful rules so she takes things!!! i told her that it was bad and i felt bad, but i am glad i did, because she doesnt do it as much anymore.
in your situation, of course, you might feel bad now, but i am sure you feel better when you relize you did the right thing.

But just remember when handling these children from the neighborhood, Some day your boy will be old enough to go to the park with his friends and might get bullied because the kids feel you are a bully. Also if you pup ever did get away from you, your gonna want those same kids to be nice and bring him home safe and sound.
Next time I would just tell them that you were getting ready to leave. Then you could walk farther into the park or around the park and then continue to play with your boy and pup.

Haircut or no? Which is more soothing?
My JRT/Westie mix has adorable wafts of curls that make her a shaggy dog that I love and adore. Of course if we don't brush her everyday, it just sorts of mats down. Today is the first really hot day and she seemed in hog heaven that I was brushing her at lunch.
Should she get a summer haircut? Should she be cut regularly to keep the hair out of her eyes? (It kind of curls up in front of her eyes a bit from her nose/jowels).
I love my shaggy dog but I want her to be cool and comfy. Does it really make a big difference in that type of coat (semi-wirey).

You can take her to a professional groomer and have the pads of her feet trimmed and her eyes and her belly, she'll be cooler but still have hair. She could also get a long haircut so she has hair, but not too long and it can have shape.
Wire coats do stay cooler than double thick coats. Any dog benefits from brushing. I'd brush her daily if you want her to keep her hair. Brushing also helps you spot problems before they become bad...ticks, sores, hot spots...etc...
if it is hot where you live, you should. if you don't, your dog could have a heat stroke.

Actually dogs don't lose heat like humans. They don't sweat they pant and lost heat through their pads. So getting her cut is really up to you and how you want her to look. She probably loved the attention and feel of the brush, it's good bonding time.

Hair Loss on a dog?
My Pug has one long bald spot about 4 inches long by 1/2 inch wide on her stomach. and a little it of bald under her "armpits" no where else. Is this caused from a nutrient deficentcy? What would cause this? Any input would help thanks.

your dog could have a problem with it's thyroid. my dog started losing hair and they told me it was her thyroid. they have medication to control that. they also put my dog on vitaims as that helped her. I bought a product called Healthy Coat and my dogs hair came back in very nicely. you can get it at petsmart.

Have you noticed you dog scratching or bieting himself? He could be bieting/scratching the hair off. Does he have fleas? That is what my dogs did when he had fleas. He chewed almost all the hair off his leg from being so itchy! If none of these things apply to your dog, call or go to your vet.

Okay, well I got two new puppies. I am trying very hard to figure out what breed these pups are, the guy I got them from told me, but Im not sure if he was right or not. So after I get some responces ill tell you all what. I just want to see what you guys think without having the thought of what they might be affecting your judgment. I posted on another forum, and they all pretty much saying the same thing, so thought id let people guess here and see what they come up with :) Also would you say there littermates, or not?
PS, they may be purebred and they might be mixed.

I'm not sure on all dog breeds, but I'd say they look like a mix between Jack Russell's and Boxers. (Is that possible?!) They do look like littermates to me as well. The ears, eyes and build do it for me, but hey I could be wrong. First wild guess of the night. how'd I do? lol

One looks like a Jackrussel mix and the other a boxer mix. Litter mates can have different fathers so it is possible for them to be two different breeds. When a female is in heat, she ovulates a few eggs on different days, so she can mate with a jack russel one day, and a boxer another day, and there you have litter mates from different daddies!!!
I don't think that they look like the same breed at all.
What this means is that the owners of the mama are REALLY irresponsible to allow 2 different males to mate with her.
Sheesh - when will people learn to fix their pets or watch them closely! At least you got two cute pups from it!
Oh, by the way, some answeres are saying their faces look the same! NOT!! One has a pointly muzzle while the other has a blunt muzzle. One has a smooth forehead and the other is a tad wrinkly like a boxer. Totally different baby daddies! Or, on the off chance, one just takes after their mom, and the other after their dad.

brown one is anyone's guess. Lots of pups have the wrinkly forehead, but it's very common in boxers and APBTs too. Because of size, I'd also want to mention feists (patterdale terrier).
If you really want to know, have them DNA tested for breed. The test is like $70.

I'm not sure on all dog breeds, but I'd say they look like a mix between Jack Russell's and Boxers. (Is that possible?!) They do look like littermates to me as well. The ears, eyes and build do it for me, but hey I could be wrong. First wild guess of the night. how'd I do? lol

if i had to guess i would say that they are terrior mix or maybe beagle mix. yeah i can see that they may be related mainly in the faces. although the brown one does show some signs of pit but not enough to be possitive

When a female is in heat, she ovulates a few eggs on different days, so she can mate with a jack russel one day, and a boxer another day, and there you have litter mates from different daddies!!!

There's no one breed that's the best guard dog. A dog is what you make it - you need a dog with a stable temperament from a reputable breeder, the rest depends on the quality of his training. None of these dogs should be owned by someone with no dog experience.
be careful when you get your dog not trained right any dog can be dangerous. My homeowners will not let us have a rott or dobie which tells me they can both be bad to get. If you have small children keep that in mind when picking your dog.
It is not the dog you choose it is the way you treat your dog if you just put them in a yard and show no love they are not going to protect you if you show your dog love they will die for you
Rottweilers in my opinion are the best guardians. I use to have 2 Rotties and they were the most compasionate dogs in the world when it came to protecting their territory. They never bit anybody but they scared the bajesus out of them when someone tried getting in our yard. Somebody tried climbing our fence and getting into our house and they didnt know we had a Rottweiler. Needless to say the dog got the guy cornered until someone from my household got outside.

But, it really depends on the dog's training and desire to protect. From this perspective, the list would probably be Doberman, then Rotweiler, then Presa and Filo.

We had a guy knock on our door late at night (in the county) claiming to have car troubles and the dog must have known that the guy was "shady" because he just sat there and gave the guy his "I mean business" growl through the screen door...anyway, the next day, we found out that houses had been broken into on our road!! Good guard dog? I think so!! :)
Why ? What will you do w/this dog??? If you aren't going to make it a part of your family and train it extensively you have NO need for a dog like that. If you want a junk yard dog why not pay for an alarm system. Too many people are harmed by dogs that an owner lets get out and bite or kill someone. I have one of the dogs you describe and I am penalized because of the owner of one turned it into a vicious animal. These dogs are meant to be family dogs...NOT KILLERS
All of these dogs are capable of being excellent guardian dogs. The downside to them is if they aren't trained and socialized properly then they can have serious behavior issues.
Have you considered a great pyrenees? I'm just going to assume that you want a pet to become a member of the family, not a lawn ornament. Just fair warning: It would be cheaper, easier, more dependable, and less stressful if you just got an alarm system.

But any-whoo.. A doberman is not dangerous unless you abuse it, or treat it wrong for example, hitting him, ignoring, screaming at them abusivly, purposuly abusng him, and ect ect. As with any dog, they would become angry and not take it anymore, and snap back. But for NO reason EVER will a dobe attack its owner for no reason. And when you get a dobie, its all on how you raise it. Keeping it isolated from people and other animals will make it become afraid. let me tell you a bit about dobes!

Also, you wouldn't be sorry. They dont shed, they are VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY easy to train because of their intelligence, Extremly humorus!! Their Bark is very intimidating, and their bite is worse ONLY when needed, When trained properly. Also they are VERY Affectionate, ask any Dobe owner and they will tell you. All Breeders and dog experts will also tell you that they get their nicknames, "velcro" dogs for being soo affectionate. They love to follow you everywhere,make you laugh and please you. They love children and animals as with any other dogs, when they are familiar with them or just not afraid, or if an abused dobe, or any other dog for that matter you dont know for a fact or not, if they have problems.
Dobermans and other dogs only get bad reps becuase of the stupid idiots behind them.

So keep that in mind on how you treat your dog. If your actually looking for a protection (you, your body) then the doberman is it. They are extremely intelligent and intuitive, and whoever said before that they are wimps was a tard and has never seena shutzhund trial w/ dobies... I have two and although they are friendly with most people they can be down right scary when they feel it's necissary. Dobermans have a powerful bark as well as bite, contrary to popular belief all dogs have about the same bite strength even pitt bulls some are just bred to either ignore the pain and latch on like a APBT or to never ever bite down like a Golden retriever (goldens were breed to NOT BITE DOWN which is why they arent' biters). Both of mine have the sharpest teeth of any dog i've ever been around though, they have a ridge that i swear is razor sharp. It sounds as if you want a serious dog, I would try checking out house of Hoytt @ Hoytt.com if you are interested in a protection dog. You can get a WELL BRED puppy with extensive training there. And for your needs I recommend protection training by a licenced professional even though most dobermans don't need any protection training since it's what they were bred for. But one definate word of advice for any prospective dobie owner. They WILL NOT protect you or your property if they don't care about it. Dobies are very clingy, needy dogs, they like nothing more than to be with their people, preferably touching them. They aren't the best "guard dogs" and are better at "protection" because they are usually INSIDE dogs. They aren't happy outside wich does you no good.
As far as the Presa Canario, I wouldn't consider it. I'm not into breed bashing but it's not a safe dog to be around yourself honestly unless you have extensive dog training knowledge and know how to protect yourself from a dog attack. and trust me you don't want your dog actually killing someone, (maiming in the interest of protection maybe, but not killing)...
For guard dogs you might also consider one of the belgian shepard breeds or a mastiff breed such as the boerboel (i've heard they are GREAT guard dogs.)
