Giant Schnauzer?

Anyone know where I can find a Giant Schnauzer breeder here in Phoenix AZ?? I see them at the dog parks but dont know where I can actually get one. If you are going to send me links please make sure they show breeders in AZ. I tried the whole rescue thing but non will let me rescue if I have a child in the house which I do and she's 6 and know's better than to pull a dogs ear or hit one. Can anyone help??

If you do get a Giant Schnauzer, make sure and feed it only quality, healthy food.

Are you aware of the number of giant (and large too) breed dogs in this country that have hip problems? It is because of the food. Giant breeds DO NOT need their growth speeded up.

Keep in mind that AKC registration alone is not a guarantee of quality:
Here are some suggested questions one can use to determine if a breeder is truly responsible:

1. Is she an AKC registered breeder of good standing and an active member of her breed Parent Club?

2. Are there AKC Champions listed on the pedigree, showing that the breeder spends her time %26 money to prove the quality of her breeding stock through competition?

3. Are all the animals kept in clean, comfortable, healthy, loving circumstances?

4. Did the breeder conduct extensive interviews with you and every member of your family?

5. Have the sire %26 dam received all available health clearances, (eg. OFA Hip %26 Eye, Thyroid testing, THESE VARY FOR EACH BREED)

6. Is she willing to honestly discuss any possible genetic defects that may exist in her line?

7. Does she have a Sales Contract?

8. Does the contract contain a clause stipulating that you spay or neuter the puppy before it reaches a certain
age?

9. Does the contract contain a clause stating that if at any time in the puppy's life, you can no longer care for it, it must be returned to the breeder? (This ensures that no animal bred by this breeder will ever end up in a shelter).

10. Will the breeder maintain contact with you for the life of the puppy to answer questions and help in general?

did you know that schnauzers do not do well with children and actually some rather hate children . search your local shelter and pound for one and make sure it likes kids take your daughter with you to meet and greet the dog. this is a very important step. Or perhaps you could go to the local dog park and ask some folks there where you might obtain one . good luck .

The rescue people know their breed, if they feel that a GS would not be good with a child of that age they are probably right.

Dear Giant Schnauzer Seeker...

One of the reasons that the Rescue groups won't place a Giant Schnauzer with you and your six year old isn't because they are afraid that she will hurt or tease the dog, but rather that the dog will hurt her. Giant Schnauzer's are hunting dogs and they have been known to see small children as prey.

A reputable breeder will most likely tell you the same thing that the rescue did and won't place a puppy with you. If they will, then I would question whether you are getting a good dog.

If you contact your local AKC chapter, they can tell you who breeds locally and more importantly, they may be able to help you select a dog breed that gives you the characteristics of the Giant Schnauzer that you are eager to have, while giving you something more appropriate and safe for your child.
