Golden Retriever Pup Dry Skin?

Hello
I have a golden pup who is about 4 months old. I have noticed since I got him that he has HORRIBLE dry skin, it looks like dandruff all over his body. He is on good food (Innova). What else can I do for him?
Answers:
First you have to learn why he is having such dry skin. The food sounds fine. Have you given him a bath lately??

Golden's of any age need to have a good bath with Oatmeal shampoo and a conditioner. The most important thing with Golden's or any double coated dogs it not so much in the soaping up but with the rising off. You MUST rinse your pup off very, very well. Golden's will retain alot of the shampoo in their coats if it is not rinsed out properly. It will dry their skin out and cause flaking.
To make sure it is actually dry skin first I advise you to get your pup to the vets to make sure its just that, no underling problem.
If it is just dry skin then you can use the Oatmeal shampoo or perhaps your vet will tell you of another medicated shampoo to use on your pup. Remember to rinse, rinse the dog.
Good luck with your Godlen pup.
mink oil spray,it conditions skin/coat
Vets sell an oil you can put on the food. I take the puppy there first to make sure it isn't something more serious than dandruff. Also, brush his fur every day and that will help stimulate the natural oils.

My female Goldie loves her "Pet Promise" dry food and she has never had a problem.

Aren't they wonderful dogs?
retrievers and labs are prone to skin conditions. Get a good oatmeal shampoo and get the pup tested for allergies.
Giving your pup some fish oil capsules everyday will help also. Don't use any perfumed sprays on its coat.

Make sure you check the pet food recall list often.

You might want to try Hertz dog shampoo or baby shampoo and try rinsing rinsing the soap off your puppy. Eventually the dandruff will go away.
I don't think Innova is a good food...but I don't think any kibbles are good, since I feed raw. I often find (with other people's dogs) that at this sort of age, the toxins from the vaccinations are starting to come out. I personally don't like bathing too much..it just dries the skin out even more. If you must feed kibble, try adding some Omega 3 oils to the diet, or just some fish oil. A treatment of Dandelion and Burdock (for the liver) would be a good internal cleanser, because the skin is a reflection of the internal condition of the dog. You would be able to get a D %26 B treatment from any good herbalist.

Wishing you all the best with your golden...lovely dogs.
You can add some Grizzly Salmon Oil to his food. It worked for my Chi.
Add some Omega 3 oils, give him a capsule each day.

Also don't bath him.. Bathing removes the protective oils from the coat and will make him even more dry.
Good quality dogfood, brush him to keep his coat clean and free of dirt, and keep the oils spread thru his coat..,. and he should be good.
You don't necessarily need to go to the vet to get an oil to put on their food. I have poured a little olive or vegi oil on my dogs food for years and he has not had dry skin problems since. Giving fish oil caplets in addition is wonderful. I agree with the others that mention oatmeal shampoo. If anything it will sooth your puppys skin so they aren't in any discomfort. Just try not to use too warm of water when bathing though because that will dry out the skin even more.
