Good medium size starter puppy for a first time puppy owner?

What is a good breed of puppy that will be medium sized as a adult and is low maintance?
Answers:
No dog is "low" maintenance. Dogs require a lot of care and training. The more training you put into the puppy when they are young though, the more "low" maintenance your older dog will be. That's why so many folks get rid of their dogs or leave them outside, because they end up being too "high" maintenance. Just google med. size dogs or go to the American Kennel Club and see all the breeds. Cocker spaniels, Beagles, certain mutts from the pound, they are all med. size dogs. Mutts from the pound are usually the best pets you can get though. Go check out your local shelter, see what they have and ask questions.
We will need to know some other info to help...i.e. good with children, protective, highly active, etc.
Bull terriers: they are great family dogs, low energy, low maintenance, and are medium sized w/ great personalities. Look the breed up (f.y.i. they are not pit bulls or anything)
Go to your local shelter or go to petfinder.com if your not picky about breeds and go meet dogs there..
i wouldn't adopt a puppy if you have never had a dog before. they are A LOT of work and most end up in shelters. I have had pure bred puppies before and shelter dogs that came to me when they were 2 yrs old and trust me.. the shelter dogs were sooo much better to get adjusted to living in my house. generally they are easier to housebreak and are more loving. check out petfinder.com to see dogs up for adoption in your area.
Bordie collies are great medium sized dogs. They will lay around the yard and stay home and are very good natured. So much nicer then a noisy little shelty.
Australian Shepards are extremely good choices for new owners. They are low maintenace, well behaved, good with kids, very easy to train and don't bark.

Hope this helped! Good luck with your puppy!
There are more then 50 dog breeds that are like that, I need more info!
try cocker spaniel or labrador. but the best bet of all is to go to your local humane shelter and browse over the dogs there and choose one that is on execution row. for a first timer, i would suggest an adult, already trained dog. the dogs at the shelter are not always strays, sometimes they have been loved by an elderly person who passed away and nobody wanted to care for the dog...and now it is there...a great dog...without a home, in the same boat as the strays. i can tell you from experience that strays that have been rescued DO seem most appreciative of the gift of life and freedom you have given them, not to mention the home and love. i have NEVER had cause to regret taking in a stray.
Hmmm, a keeshond makes good pets and are medium sized, only thier coats cause a slight problem.

Labs are touch and go as are retrievers.

Most dogs from the Spaniel family make awesome dogs!
My Keeshond is the sweetest thing ever. They make wonderful dogs and are very loving. They are super cute too
"The Right Dog for You" by Daniel Tortora is an excellent book to find out what would be best for you.
i think your best choice for a first timer is to get a good ol' mutt. mix breeds are less prone to breed specific issues like hip displaysia, some breeds are prone to anxiety like disorders and the like. these things make it much harder to enjoy a long life with your pooch try to get one that will weigh in at 30-50lbs with short hair (makes grooming easier). also go to the american kennel club website to look up the varius breeds for size, temperment, and quirks like will chew everything in site type info. the vet or shelter operators can tell what the dogs are mixed from.
Basenji dogs are wonderful, beautiful dogs. And they don't even BARK!!! This is the #1 suggestion.

Other good low maintenance ones Daschunds, Italian Greyhounds, Jack Russell Terriers (these can be hyper), Fox Terriers, Boxers (can be big), Beagles, Miniature schnauzers (need grooming), Cocker Spaniels (also need grooming).

I would avoid pitt bulls at all cost. We had one (and we are very gentle, calm people) and it was very violent to our cats. Scary! I don't care what people say. Ask yourself why there are so many pitt bulls in shelters and pounds. They are NOT good pets!

Good luck!!
Beagles are a great choice. I had them growing up and they are low maintenance. Get along great with kids. They can be stubborn and should go to obedience training but they are definitely one of my favorites.
A boston terrier is a great dog to have. They are very affectionate, loving. loyal, and they are a great laugh. They range from like 20 ro 25 pounds. They are actually catagorized as small dogs but I dont think of mine that way. To me they are perfect size. They dont shed, dont need grooming, just baths when needed but they dry real quick. They are great dogs. They are great especially with children, and the elderly. They love to play and run out their energy on their own. They especially love being you and LOVE LOVE LOVE to ride where ever you go.
I say a smooth collie. they tend to be about up to your knee. because of their short fur they dont require much grooming.
