Getting a puppy? What to expect on training?

in a few months we'll be getting a boxer pup. I'd never had a dog of my own, and don't know the first thing about training. We do plan to start obedience training ASAP. However, I've no clue what to expect on house breaking and crate training. About how long does it take to get a dog house broken and crate trained? Any good tips?
Answers:
different dogs taken different amounts of time. if you start with a new puppy and crate train him, it can be a couple of weeks. here's what to remember:
dogs won't go to the bathroom where they sleep - put the pup in a crate that is small enough that he can't crap in one end and sleep in the other.
take the pup outside to go to the bathroom immediately when you let him out of the crate. if you can't keep him from doing it right on the floor when you let him out, carry him. whatever you do, don't let him go inside. but to be fair, you have to help him out by taking him out right away.
have reasonable expectations - dogs have to learn how to hold it like everyone else. start off by crating him for a short period of time, then let him outside. after a couple of days, try for a longer period of time. it is unrealistic to put him in his crate on the first day, go to work for 8 hours, and expect to come home without the pup having an accident.
use positive reinforcement. reward the dog with a treat after he goes to the bathroom outside.
don't punish the dog after the fact. dog's have a short term memory of about 7 minutes. when they're younger, it's even shorter. if you yell at him after the fact, he won't know what you're yelling about. this is totally different than conditioning. conditioning is repeating the same action or series of actions over and over again, so the dog becomes programmed. dog behavior has little to do with short term memory.
consistency is key. be consistent with the dog, find methods the dog understands. food treats work really well. short yet firm tugs on a leash also work. use the same command word, give a little tug (guide the dog at first by physically making him do what you want while repeating the word). then when the desired behavior is complete, reward.
Keep it in a crate and then take it outside to go to the bathroom. Shove the puppies nose in his poop if he goes on the carpet after that along with a spanking and firm command "no". By the way baby, when did I say you could get a puppy? You know you need to talk to me about this first hon. XOXO
WELL A THINK D TRAINER WILL TKAE CARE OFF ALL UR PROB
Rubbing its nose in its poop is cruel. You need to learn how to properly train your puppy. Get this cheap ebook and you'll see how easy it is:

How long it takes depends on the you and the puppy. There is no exact time table.

Good luck with your new puppy.
a whole lotta patience,,let him/her run around get used to the surroundings,,thats what i did with my lab,now 12 yrs old,,
You will have to remember you have to work with the pup day in/out. As soon as you feed and water the pup(maybe 15 minutes later) take it outside and stay with it until it uses the bathroom(may seem like forever too). Once the puppy goes then tell it how good of a boy/girl it is. Never spank the pup just because it has not gone when you "expect" it to.There will be times when you have stayed outside with it for say a 1/2 hour and it has not gone, you give up bring it inside and there she/he pees. Dont spank the pup just tell him/her in a firm voice "bad girl/boy" and immediately take it back outside. Some pups take longer than others to learn. When you Crate it, leave it there when it cries because if you take it outeverytime he/she makes a whimper then the pup is "training" you and getting its' own way-------------just like a kid when they want attention. There is a lot of work involved.
well for starters, your dog will not want to do anything but play. You have to teach him his name before you can teach him other things. I know that your puppy might bite you but then if he does you will have to hold him back. Start with teaching him to sit and stay. Those will help you in the future, do not make your dog do anything he does not want to do. Also right after you get him you should stop by the vet, just incase. NEVER RUB ITS' NOSE IN POOP, fyi just keep taking him out a few minutes after he eats, the create a "go Phrase" like I chose "get busy Sid". And sure enough the little guy will poop.

I had Sidney potty trained on the way home from is breeder's. I stopped the car every 30 minutes, took him out to a safe spot, and let him wizz and take a sip of water. After we got him home I watched very carefully for him sniffing the carpet etc. then I would zip him outside and praise him after he wizzed. His baby picture is at the top right of the mastiff360.com web site. Ohhhh now I want another baby mastiff.

I never crate trained Sidney, he was bound to grow to be huge and I think crating a huge dog is mean, but that is my opinion. Sidney has the run of the house.

There is a training link on this site too.
