Yes indeed. This sounds like a false pregnancy. If this female is not spayed, and has recently been in season, this is a common problem. Once it happens it will always happen. Each time she comes into heat or estrus this will happen a few weeks later. She will mother something, her nipples will become swollen and painful, fill with milk, and sometimes you will have to take her to the vet to get a shot to dry up the milk. Other times she could experience infection in her milk ducts. I would have her spayed to eliminate this problem every 6 months. She will probably develop endometryosis and have to be spayed anyway. These false pregnancies can cause a lot of mental problems in females wanting to nurture or nest. Give her whatever she is trying to mother and don't take it away from her. You will cause a lot of stress and mental torment for her. Let her do what she is going to do. You will only be able to stop this by having her spayed.
it could be a phantom pregnancy, but when this happens the dogs nipples will begin to grow a little. this is usually a sure sign
is it about 9 weeks following her season? is she producing milk from her teats ?? I had an Afghan female who always had phantom pregnancys, she would find a dark corner, or under the stairs and tear up paper or the carpet! latch on to a teddy or toy and wouldn't come out for days, it was a job to get her out to even have a pee, cos she'd just want to go back there. She would howl the place down. There is a natural remedy called "pulsatilla" which helps, but you just have to ride it out for about 7-10 days. If you aren't going to breed or show her in the future, have her spayed and she won't have the problem again.
Yes i had exactly the same thing with my Airdale terrier and it was the same thing every six months, she even had the squeaky toy and did all the same things as your dog.
When i told the vet he said it won't stop until she is neutered.
And sure enough it stopped after the op.
Hope this has been a little informative.

Cheers Cheeky.
Ok frist of all like everyone else had she been in season lately? If she has and there is any chance that any dog could have found it's way into the fence (if you have one) you should take her to a vet! If not watch for breast swelling or stomache swelling. At the frist sign take her to the vet.
Also just ask the vet they are more willing to help you(free of charge)than you think. Maybe she just needs to have a mate or be fixed. My vet will answer questions over the phone free of charge let you know if she should be seen let me know.
I suggest you visit http://www.dogsvets.net and consult a vet for free
