Grooming tips for new puppy?

my grandma just purchased a 4 month old Maltese x Bichon Fris茅. He's white, and has the longish hair of a Maltese, and we have no idea
how he should have his hair groomed. is there a specific popular maltese cut?

any tips or ideas are appreciated.

To start with, you should introduce him to daily brushing so he gets used to it. Next, find yourself a REALLY good dog groomer who is experienced with new/young dogs. Don't be afraid to watch them groom other dogs first. You want to make sure that taking your puppy to the groomers is a "fun" experience... not something that's going to tramatize him.
There are also dog grooming books available in most books stores which will show you how to clip your own dog in a variety of different cuts and styles.
Last... if you aren't planning to show him, and aren't looking for a "fashion" accessory, you could always get a pair of clippers and have fun. My husband regularly shaves his dog (I think it's a lab/shepherd cross) to help keep it cool during the summer. There have been times when he's just shaved his intials into the dog... or shaved everything but his head and the tip of his tail... and other times he looks like a zebra. My husband only leaves him that way until I've seen him, then he clips him properly. Before people get horrified. let me get this clear. Zed adores being clipped and during the whole process stands there with a big goofy grin on his face. He always gets his treats afterwards and then runs around showing off to everyone. LOL!!
(Ahem!) So... yes, start off slowly and with LOTS of praise and treats. He'll get to quickly love being pampered!
For this age, most puppies don't get the standard adult cut. Their hair isn't long enough and it changes a few times until they are about a year old.

Generally long straight haired puppies, maltese, shih-tzu, etc, get a "puppy cut" which can be closely described as kinda like a Westie.

You want to make sure the hair on the face gets to grow out. If its always short it will always be sticking in the eyes.

Basically, a top knot with most of the body hair being about 2 inches long all over.

An experienced groomer will be able to do a "puppy" cut for you. Its fairly standard.
Bichons don't shed. They will matt if you don't keep them clipped and combed. Their fur is like sheep's wool. Just take him to a groomer to be shaved every 6 weeks. They know how to do it.
