GSD 18 weeks old, ears still down. Is there still time for them to become erect? Any remedies for soft ear ?
Answers:
Leave them well alone! There are ridiculous "remedies" of tying them up or massaging the base.they don't work, and will cause damage! My GSD was over 6 months before his ears stuck up (before that that met in the middle like a turban!), and it's only now he's 14 months that they are truly upright and don't have down days!
Love the dog for what he is, not what he looks like...so what if his ears never stand up (this is possible), he'll be quirky and cute!
Yes -- Erect ears often go up and down as the pup goes thru growth stages -- and many especially will remain down until the pup is doen teeting. Feed your puppy a good quality food and don't fuss with the ears too much.
As said above, the GSD ears can go both up and down, but should become fully erect after six months. Enjoy your time with your German Shepherd - they are the best dogs in the world.
As someone who has bred GSD litters, and had a soft eared GSD (having left it alone) I can assure you that the ear may or may not come up. BUT, if you follow the regime below, the ear will almost certainly come up. And, no, it will *not* harm your dog. (Giving a marrow bone is very important, the ear muscles are strengthened incredibly by knawing on a bone.)
To strengthen soft ears:-
Place 2 camomile teabags in cup or small mug.
Add boiling water until 3/4 full.
Sit for 20 minutes.
Add 1 teaspoon witchhazel.
Then:- Wet outside of ear with piece of cotton wool, which has been soaked in the above, massaging the ear from the bottom towards the tip as you do so.
With a clean piece of cotton wool, wet the inside of the ear (not soaking it) and allow a little to trickle into the ear. Hold until liquid goes into channel.
Do this about three times a day.
Also:- Give a marrow bone to strengthen the muscles.
Also advise:- Put on a chicken wing diet.
All the best.hope the ear comes up.
See your vet. There is some plastic surgery they can do.
There is still plenty of time, the dog in my picture's ears looked like windscreen wipers right up until he was 5 and a half months old and unless you intend showing your dog, why worry about it.
Stop worrying. I have a 6 month GSD *****. Her ears are perfect now, a couple of months ago they were soft and down and then only one was up. Plenty of time for your pup.
