Has anyone ever seen a tri colored pit bull of staffie?

Do you know any websites where I can find pictures of one?
Answers:
Try searching google images. I looked and there was a few. But other wise go to... www.askcolorado.com and ask them. Or else try www.askwisconsin.com and ask them. Then they will help you find some pics. on the Internet.
Come to think of it, I don't think I have. All I can think of is solids and bi-color. Sorry!
My little Pit is a mix so he may not count in your book, but he is brown and black ( brindle-ish) and white on the head and neck.

Has anyone ever put their dog on Prozac for seperation anxiety?

I have a 15mth old Neapolitan Bullmastiff. She destroys everything when left alone. U can't leave her in a crate because she can get out, regardless of how it's locked. She has eaten holes in the walls, tore chunks out of the drywall around door facings, etc...This behavior did not start until last summer when we went on a 4day vacation. My brother was supposed to take care of her, and didn't do a very good job. Since then, she goes nuts when we get our keys, leave her site, etc... She has no behavior problems however when we are at home with her, other than she likes to check and make sure you're still there. Homeopathic process has not worked. Can not do behavior program due to there being 5 of us and I'm the only 1 willing to try it. Our vet is putting her on Prozac to help her. Has anyone else used it? How long does it take to work? Does it leave your dog dopey or will they still want to play, just have a lower stress level? I appreciate all help and any info. u can give
Answers:
My vet also recommended Prozac for my dog when he had separation anxiety. I opted not to give it to him, however I heard it works really well.

Instead I showered him with attention when I was home. When I left the house at first, I would leave for only 5 minutes. When you go back in the house praise, praise, praise (if the dog has not destroyed anything). Reward with treats.

Then I slowly increased the time that I would wait outside. If you go back in, or hear through the door that the dog is into something, use your best disappointed voice and do not reward. However never hit the dog!

Dogs have to be "punished" very quickly after an incident, otherwise they don't know what they're being punished for. For example, if you leave at 2pm, the dog rips the couch at 4pm, and you don't get home until 7pm, the dog won't know what you're mad about. He forgot about the couch hours ago.

This method worked for me and my dog was pretty bad when we got him. However it took a lot of effort. You may want to combine this method with the Prozac.

After the dog is up to 30 minutes of good behaviour on his own, I would just keep increasing the times that you're away from the house.
Well, I didn't even know you could put a dog on Prozac, however, my husband takes it, and he does fine when left alone! No, I'm sorry, just trying to make light of the situation. Fortunatly, I've never been there, so I don't know. But, anti depressants do work on humans. if that helps any. ?

Has anyone ever purchased a Bulldog from bigbulldogs.com?

I bought a puppy from Todd Howard @ bigbulldogs.com. I found out 2 months after I bought my pup that he was from Hungary and he was shipped to the USA at approximately 5 weeks old. Has anyone else had the same problem with bigbulldogs.com?
Answers:
He is an import broker. He orders puppies from puppymills in Europe (mainly Hungary, Ukraine, and Russia) and then resells them in the US. Most of the puppies that he gets come from puppymills in those countries, even though they will say that they are reputable breeders. I drives me nuts that he has a little blurb on his page about scamming, but yet he buys from puppymills. He always has puppies available, and there is no way that he could have that many if he bred them himself (unless he was a puppymill).

I considered purchasing a French Bulldog puppy from him a few years ago, but I decided to go with a breeder that was closer to where I was located since I do not believe in shipping puppies. Also, I though that it was a little fishy that he could not provide me with pictures of the parents of the puppy that I was wanting to get, nor was he willing to provide pedigrees (I was told to just "take his word for it").
No but everyone knows not to buy a dog over the internet without seeking the dog in person first. You always need to examine the puppies and the parents before the purchase!

Shame on you for not doing your homework before getting a puppy!!!!

KRISTI W: I don't answer questions just to get points, I answer them to help others understand the importance of things unlike you!
"Miss Yay Points!"
Well, having a dog you've never seen, shipped to you after you bought him online doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Especially a dog that can have so many health problems. Given that the website specifies breeders in California, you can probably report them to the Better Business bureau for having provided inaccurate information.
Was your puppy defective in any way? If not, then the seller took the risk of his untimely shipment, and unless the seller gave you pedigree details, then you can have no complaints.
However, if the pup is ill, or the seller told you that his bulldogs were the parents, showed you pictures of the parents, etc. that is an illegal transaction, deserving of a police complaint for fraud.
California has a puppy lemon law, so the buyer is protected against buying puppies under 8 weeks, or with serious illness..You can contact your local Humane Society, or go online and search 'puppy lemon law, ca' to learn of your rights.
I looked on the site, and although he offers stud service, and claims to be a breeder, he doesn't do as most breeders will do, and post the parent's names of the puppies offered, or any other info, except the picture.
If you didn't visit the kennel to meet mom and dad, then that is always the risk you take..
If there are problems rather than just the ethics of the deal, then you can pursue the above recourse.

Notice on his website,, there is no mention of his facilities, no pics of the kennels, or the dogs indoors, no pedigrees, no claim of genetic testing, no show records of any kind..I see nothing illegal from this angle...His site also reads just like Europpuppy..So I am assuming he borrowed from their site..They (europuppy) actually have a good reputation for delivering healthy pups from overseas..But they are very upfront with letting you know exactly where the puppy is coming from.

Edit: another RED FLAG is they are called, 'English Bulldog' on his site, The AKC and UKC, and Canadian KC all define the breed as 'Bulldog'..no 'English' on it..when you see them advertised as English bulldogs, they are looking for the uneducated buyer> http://www.akc.org/breeds/bulldog/...
Buying a dog over the internet sounds like the stupidest thing ive ever hear. Suppose you do buy this dog, and a week later it falls ill. how are you going to either return the dog and get your money back, or ask for the breeder to pay for the vet bills?

Do not buy dogs from HUNGARY everyone knows that country has more dog mills then the entire worlds put together. 5 weeks was too young, your lucky your dog didnt die!

Has anyone ever left a dog or puppy home alone for a week while traveling? And someone to come by once a day?

The person would give him water and food for the entire day, take him out, clean out the wee wee pads. It's just so expensive to put him in doggie day care, wondering what the problems would be.
Answers:
Having a petsitter is great choice, but they should make more than one trip a day...at least two. When I petsit, I go 4 times a day.
Some things to consider...
Make sure you have numbers to your family vet and emergency clinic in case of problems.
Make sure your petsitter has very clear instructions on what to do in case of emergency, even for serious, life threatening situations.
Make sure you leave numbers you can be reached.
Call your family vet and let them know you are leaving, and if there is an emergency what you want them to do.

People usually do not prepare for emergencies and the petsitters are often faced with very difficult decisions when something goes wrong. Talk about finances, talk about CPR...it is not a good subject, but if there is a problem, you will be glad you did.
we do it works great!
Make sure it's someone you totally trust...otherwise you may come home to nothing...Good Luck
Whenever my husband and I leave town for more than a few hours say a week we ask my mom, grandma or brother to come let the dogs out at noon and before they go to bed but they usually stay over and sleep there. They house sit as well as dog sit. Just make sure to tell them not to forget your dog outside if your dog is an inside dog or doesn't have a dog house outside. Also have them not open the front door or your dog will get out. No matter how good a dog he is, he is STILL a dog and freedom trumps snacks and shelter. glgl mzz
depends on your dog. if you let him out often this will confuse and possible mess up his schedule. i would suggest finding him a home somewhere for the week that you are gone and give the caretaker like 50-$100 for their time.
I've never done it, but my friend went over 3 times a day for 5 days to her friends house to take care of her two cats, two turtles, and two mini poodles. It worked fine, but make sure they have enough time with the person who comes to visit them for their personal needs.
He'll need to go out more than once a day and he'll be lonely.(He's only a baby) May be have some one spend the week with him, like a relative or close friend.Or a least have some one come over 3 time a day.
Well leaving it home alone can be very boring for it. Sometimes dogs and cats go into depression and dont eat at all. Then when you get home they have died of starvation. I think the babysitter thing is okay but have them come 3 times a day.
Make sure the person comes by AT LEAST 3 times a day.

Also close off as many rooms as possible to avoid destructive habits. Buy some nylabones or kongs and instruct the person to give one each time he/she leaves.

Don't feed your dog once a day, he/she will get bloat and die, especially painful if untreated and left alone(because he/she was only checked on once a day)
Sorry but leaving a dog home all day and have someone come by only once a day just isn't right. The dog or pup will be in the crate too long. You will come home to a very depressed dog or pup or a very sick one.
Find other arrangements or see if you can get someone to come by 2 times each day to at least walk the dog and play with it.
If you cant do this then find a kennel or a pet hotel to board your dog.
Dogs need to get more exercise than that. See if you can get two people to come by, once in the morning to walk him (they need about 45 minutes of good exercise each day) and one in the evening to feed him and take him out again. As long as it's only for a week, that should be sufficient.
((to answer if 1x a day is ok- here's a challenge to you..

go to the bathroom 1x in the morning, then try holding it for the rest of the day. (Drink normally). lets see how you fair with that 1 out time you think is adequate))

the reputable pet sitters have Vets they go to if there is an emergency- know animal and human CPR, and specialize in caring for animals.

They will come by 3x a day to walk, feed and make sure there's plenty of fresh water.

It also offers comfort to the pet being able to stay at home.

however you will

1. want a reputable pet sitter with references. After all, you're letting them have a key to your house. Insist on talking to current or past clients.

2. They can charge a bit more. The more reputable they are, the more their services cost.

however, I still didn't pay that much for the sitter.

now if you're going to have a friend do it...

make sure the friend is reliable. My grandma left my cousin in charge of her dog when she came to visit us... when we brought her back, her dog was dehydrated, had no water for days, old food and needed serious vet bills.

We made my grandma bring the dog with her to our house ever since then. We were disgusted with my cousin and never forgave her.

so make sure your friend is trust worthy.

if he/she is... there's no problem with doing this.

but you'll need them to come by more than 1x a day.

dogs need to urinate up to 5 times a day- 3x is the bare minimum they should get out.

and they need to go on walkies and have some attention time.

If your friend is unable to do this, please consider doggie day care or a pet sitter regardless if it will cost you more.

its not healthy for any animal, human or canine or feline, to be checked on 1 time and left alone the rest of the day and night.

QUOTE It's just I don't want to spend that much on pet care. I have been thinking of leaving him alone and having her come once a day /END QUOTE

That is the responsibility you took on when you became a pet owner.

Financial, emotional, health wise.

if you don't want to spend that much in pet care- you should take that into consideration when you are about to adopt a pet.

if you had a child... and wanted to go out of town...

would you leave that child home alone all day with a person to come to check on her once?

A dog is a perpetual child. If someone comes by once a day- you'll have a house full of accidents or a dog with a bladder infection.

That is irresponsible. The pet needs out more than that. If you're not willing to pay the price for owning a pet, please don't own a pet.

how would you like it if you were unable to care for yourself, and someone only came to clean you and feed you once, no one talking to you or interacting with you for 20 hours of a 24 hour day?

Its inhumane.

Pets are going to cost money. They're not collectables you put on a shelf to take out when you want an interesting topic of conversation when you have company over.

They need vet care, food, toys, basic upkeep and if you leave town they need PROPER care. not just "I think I'll leave him home alone and have someone check up on him once a day."

that quote really saddened me.

I'm glad your sitter is saying that the cost includes checks 3x a day- but to think you'd be ok with 1x a day for less just saddens me.
This is acceptable for an adult dog, but for a puppy it is stressful. If the puppy is younger than 16 weeks definitely no.
Some owners have left pups like this as old as 6 months and found that the puppy somehow escaped confinement and chewed cords, ate rat poison, got into chocolate ect.
the price of vacation should include the price of boarding someplace where the dog is talked to,walked, stimulated mentally and shown affection as well as the food and water. how well would you do home alone with a stranger coming in once a day to take care of you?
yea its fine just make sure that it is sum one you can trust also make sure taht there is lots of water out for the whold day till they come by to check on them the puppy or dog will be fine and be really happy to see you when you get home
I actually have a neighbor of mine that brings me their dog when they go for a few days. He stays here with my two dogs and they get along great. I use to go up to there house and take him out a few times a day and feed him and play with him walk him etc.. Till around 9 at night would be the last potty break for the night. It worked out great and well bringing him here now works even better. So he's not up at the house all day and lonely in between. I would hope you have someone come over more than once a day though that wouldn't' be enough in a days time for a dog to be let out or fed etc.. But it works great. I know what you mean about day care that can get costly. But yes make sure it's someone you can trust and know. So you know the dog will be fed and taken out etc.. and not just left alone the whole time your gone.

Once a day is not enough time to be let out for a puppy please keep that in mind. How can you expect a puppy to only be let out once the whole 24hrs a day thats askin quite a bit for a little puppy.
working at a dog kennel i can see your point of how much it costs. most kennels like ours offer prices by weight and some will mail you your bill. leaving a dog or puppy at home can have many risks. the dog could severely tear up or eat something he or she is not supposed to. even if someone comes once a day, say for an hour or so, the dog will only get let out for potty once a day and wont be properly supervised. another problem is separation anxiety, or even proper temperature controls. unless you have a 12 - 24 hour babysitter i would suggest looking into dog kennels around your area and even tour places to find the most suitable.
yes, all the time! Your dog will prefer being home rather than in a kennel anyways, he's familiar with his home, a kennel is a scary place for a dog. Your dog will be happy and content until you come home, just make sure it's someone responsible looking after him!
I own a Dogwalking %26 Pet Care service business %26 I feel that a 1X a day visit is simply not enough, especially not for a puppy. You don't need to put him in daycare, but do some research for dogwalkers in your area. Most walkers will gladly schedule you for 2-3 visits a day while your away, %26 maybe even give you some type of discount (if you inquire.) If this still ends up being too much $$, call the Veteranarians in your area. Many are set up for boarding %26 it tends to be much less $$ than a doggie daycare. They'll also have someone there for him 24/7, though there may not be as much individual attention given to your pup as there would be with a higher $$ service.
That is a very long time for a dog, and just way too long for a puppy. They sleep a lot ,but just imagine if he thinks its another day every time he wakes up. He will cry so much he could possibly get sick or have real problems for the rest of his life. An old dog might be okay but I don't reccomend this for any dog. If your neighbor could take him for a big walk, and maybe even for a short visit to his house for an hour or so. It may give the dog something to look forward to, but this is not a good situation at all. Could you possibly find a dog sitter to come and stay with him every other day? Why can't you take the dog along? I wish I lived in your neighborhood I would keep him for you. Have you tried an ad like dog babysitter? Then ask if they would take your dog to their house. Good Luck Please try tio find a better arrangement. Never leave a puppy for a week.
No, I do that with my Cat

Has anyone ever known a dog to get sick from taking Glucosamine?

I have given her dosage in the past and found out that I was giving her too much. I have started again recently, giving her the proper amount according to her vet. She is a very large (not fat) Golden Retriever, so he said to give her 1500 mg per day (split 750 twice a day). She refused to eat this morning and still had not eaten when my husband checked on her at lunch - that is not like her at all. She is also very lethargic. My first intuition is to stop the Glucosamine again, but I don't want her joints to go bad. She is only 8 years old.
Answers:
Goldens are prone to joint problems so I can understand your concern. I would try to decrease the dose. If she still can't tolerate it then you might just have to deal with any joint problems that come up with aging. If she is getting around well now, you are doing great. Their lifespan is only 10-11 years usually, so she is doing well at 8 if she has no problems.
I feed my dog Glucosamine as she has a spinal disease called spondylosis , a form of arthritis and she couldn't be better ! I did a lot of reading up before I gave it to her and found no evidence for me to worry about giving it to her . She is a staffordshire bull terrier and takes 600mg along with chrondrotin and MSM so they all work together which may be better .I am not suggestioning YOU do this but I do think it might be something else and not the glucosamine. Maybe have her checked , good luck
While there are almost no side effects of glucosamine, here's what you need to know:

If you are allergic to shellfish you should consult your physician before using glucosamine products. Glucosamine is derived from shellfish.

If you are pregnant or lactating you should consult your physician before beginning to take glucosamine.

Glucosamine sulfate may increase the risk of developing insulin resistance and could decrease the metabolic actions of insulin. Although glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are biochemically classed as carbohydrates (sugars), the body is not able to break them down into glucose, so these compounds do not raise blood sugar by providing an additional source of glucose. However, many factors can affect insulin secretion and blood glucose levels in diabetic patients, and we recommend that individuals with diabetes check their blood glucose levels frequently when initiating glucosamine into their regimen.

High dosages of glucosamine may cause gastric problems, nausea , diarrhea, indigestion, and heartburn. Glucosamine should be taken with meals to help avoid these problems

Has anyone ever heard of dog nip? I heard it was going on the market. I asked Petco & they never heard of it

Answers:
I haven't heard anything about that from anyone. Sorry.
NO sorry never heard of it either. What is it supposed to be?
Never heard of it. Was it supposed to be a purebred or mixed? Big, small?
Go to the vets. In Aus we can purchase a product from the vet that helps calm dogs.
You plug it into a power outlet and it releases a scent called feremones. This is a natural chemical that dogs release when they are happy.
Humans cannot detect the smell

Has anyone ever heard of a pit bull chihuahua mix??

I would love to have one. I know the mother would have to be the pit bull and the father a chihuahua. If the pit bull laid down could the chihuahua mate with her?? I'd call it a Chi Bull. Is it possible?
Answers:
Hi Roxy,

I was a veterinary technician for 10 years, and then a police officer for 10 more. I have to say that I only saw a pit/chihuahua mix one time, and it was when I was working as a cop. The dog belonged to a homeless guy who lived in the park. It was absolutely hilarious! It looked like a chihuahua on steroids! I would say it was slightly larger than a normal sized chihuahua, but it was heavily muscled. I don't know which parent was which, but I think it could go either way if both were willing.

Good luck!
Jen.
It's possible but WRONG. Nueter your animal(s) and get either a Chi or a Pit.
how pathetic,,, why don't you just have a pit bull/shih tzu cross and call it a bull s h i t
It could be possible would not like to say really but I can see it being one ugly dog, Who would want to do this?
There are enough mutts out there in pounds etc y not get a dog from there help them have a better life than the crappy one they have had
if you find one, Ide like to see a picture... I know that at the dog parks there was a little chihuahua that woul hump all the bigger dogs.. so I guess its possible
Yes, I have and it was one of the meanest dogs that I had ever seen. This dog would attack anything that came near it, including my Great Dane while we were on a walk.
I personally do not think that those two breeds should ever be mixed together.

Has anyone ever heard of a dog breed called, YorkiApso?

Answers:
It's not a breed. It's a cross between a Yorkie and a Lhasa Apso. These days people are claiming these crosses to be breeds, for example, labradoodle. They will not breed true, they are mutts, even if the mix is intentional. But give them a "breed" name and you can charge a bunch of money for them.
no
yep..I used to have one that I adopted from the SPCA..he was so cute!
No I have not!!!
Sounds like a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Lhasa-Apso...
its a mix between a Yorkshire terrier and a Lhasa Apso, but its not a breed
It is not a breed, just a mix of a yorkie and a Lhaso Apso. In other words, a mutt.
No such breed. There are Yorkies and there are Lhasa Apsos. What you are describing is not a breed but a MIX (read: mutt) given a fancy name so somebody can charge other fools high dollars for a so-called "designer" dog.
it's probably a yorkshire terrier / lhasa apso mutt
i've never heard that mix, but anything is possible

the best mix i've heard is a
shihtpoo
it sounds so great i use it whenever i want to make the kids laugh.
so should we go shopping for a shihtpoo today?
That is a cross between and Yorkshire terrier and a lashpo apso. Interesting look lol It will bring a bit more money to a person selling one. Go to the dog shelter as one can find all shorts of mixed breeds that are adorable and need a loving home.
Yes its a combination of a yorkshire terrier and a lhasa apso.
I have a lhasa apso and I couldn't ask for a better companion.
Yup it is a cross between the Yorkshire Terrier and the Lhasa Apso. One of my best friends has one of them. They're SO cute! Seriously, they're little fuzzballs. They end up around 15 lbs, and they have a really good temperament if you're interested in getting one. I would suggest a male, females are really independent and tend to not be as completely loyal as males.
Not a breed, but a cross between Yorkshire Terrier and Lhasa Apso.
yes its a designer dog. a yorki and a Lhasa-Apso...

they can be a lot of money
A new breed ?
No. The "YORKIAPSO" is NOT a breed - it's a MUTT.

Has anyone ever had any bad experiences with Nature's Variety Raw Instinct or Canidae dog food?

I recently switched from NUTRO Ultra brand dog food, to a mix of Nature's Variety- Raw Instinct (Grain free) and Canidae. I did this b/c Nutro had several of their canned foods on the Recall List, and I prefer not to do business with a Company that outsources to China, and uses chemicals to beef up their protein. Anyway, I tried to do research on the two new companies, and saw nothing but good stuff, but I want to know if anyone has had any bad experiences with them. (Natures Variety sounds awesome b/c it contains absolutely no grains, and Canidae b/c it is holistic/human grade)
My dog is eating it, so he likes it, but he's not really picky. He's had some runny poo, but nothing major.
Answers:
Nature's Variety (Raw Instinct) and Canidae are both good products. Both are sold at the doggie daycare where I work. Raw Instinct kibble has tapioca in it rather than grains (rice, oats, etc) and is basted with raw meat juices.
I'd had my 3 dachshunds on Canidae (doing fine) but decided to try the Raw Instinct as one of them (Samson) has had chronic problems with grass allergies, diarrhea, even HGE in the past. After doing my research, I thought that perhaps the grain free product might be even better for him.
I did do a gradual switch over the period of 7-8 days.
All three absolutely loved the food.
Once they were on 100% Raw Instinct however, Samson had a two-day bout of diarrhea and I ended up (after the water, chicken %26 rice etc diet) putting him back on Canidae.
The other two had no problems with the Raw Instinct and finished off the 20# bag, then they went back on Canidae as well. In our case, I learned that if it ain't broke don't fix it. And it's easier to have just one product in the house that serves for all three dogs.
I still believe Raw Instinct is a good product, it was just not right for Sam and his funny tummy. We have many customers who swear by it for their pets.
I recently switched my dogs to Canidae too, from Nutro large breed. I switched for the same reasons. One of my goldens had minor loose stools but the other one had a bit of the runs. They have on Canidae now only no more mixing and they are fine now. Took me almost 3 weeks to get them fully switched over. I did it very slowly.
I've been feeding my 3 dogs Canidae for years. My oldest dog is 15 and in wonderful shape, still walks a mile a day, plays, nice glossy coat. His last blood work was perfect.
Yeah, I'd recommend it...no corn, no wheat, no soy.
Canidae is an amazing food! Kudos to switching, I've never heard of Natures Variety, but it sounds like that may be the cause of the runs? Other awesome food is Innova and Eagle Pack, but as long as your sticking to Holistic you and your dog will be happy, give the runs time to run out, they will!
Both of those foods are excellent. Some dogs can't handle different foods for various reasons. I had to try several foods before finding what worked best for my dog. I have decided to keep him on raw food which is pre-packaged. If you want to check into that idea, Aunt Jeni's is a great raw food. Another dry food which is very good is Innova Evo. Canned food is also a good choice because of its high meat content. Merrick canned and dry are good choices. You may need to sample a few different foods to find the right one for your dog. Be sure to feed each food long enough for the dog to adjust to it if possible. For instance, it may give him runny poop for the first few days, but after the initial introduction he may be okay.

Has anyone ever had a dog with mange?

We found a puppy and have been keeping him and he is about 15 weeks old. I noticed last week that he has splotches on his front legs and a few other places on his body. I have an appointment with the vet on Tues. I am worried about the expense. Does anyone have any idea of the cost to treat mange?
Answers:
Hi! I actually work as a Vet Assistant. You will end up paying for an exam.. Of course.. We'll guess between $25 and $40.. Depends on the clinic.. They will do a skin scrape.. Basically, what that is, is a scraping of the skin and they will look under the microscope to determine the type of mange. In most cases of mange, that I've seen was Demodex. Demodex live in the pores. If thats what it is, they will give you a special balm to rub on it.. Don't worry, you won't catch it... You're looking to spend no more than $20 for that.. BUT, it works wonders and goes a long way... They may want you to bathe him in medicated shampoo.. No more than $10. I hope this helped! Good luck with your puppy!!

~Jen
had cats with mange, we had to bath them alot with pet shampoo.i think that is the main thing you have to do also maybe some medicine you put on it but we just washed them like averyday and it went away finally.it takes a while tho.
There are two different types of mange. One is demadectic and it isn't contagious to humans. It is generally gotten by pups because their immune systems aren't completely developed. That pup needs special baths every 2 to 3 weeks for probably 3 baths t get rid of that mange. The second type of mange is sarcoptic and that is basically scabies and it contagious to human and other animals. These animals need special baths and possible medications. A vet can tell the difference. I think you need to call around to different vets for prices. Prices vary so much in different parts of the country. In any city the prices will be higher, out in the country where over head is less, the service will be less.
The infected areas feel like tons of mosquito bites and you can't stop itching, and you itch till you bleed. Try bathing him with the best you have and try putting some aloe vera on the infected spots till he sees the vet. It shouldn't be that expensive. Their just going to bathe him to relieve the itching and scaley skin and give him some anti-biotics. He's just a puppy, his whole world is you right now and he just wants it to stop. I recently found a purebred irish setter with severe infected allergies in 'both' ears. My sister and i came up with the $90 to get him treated cuz he needed immediate care and luckily found the owner and he repaid us. But the dog was out of misery and thats all the poor thing cared about. Good luck!
My dog had a very bad dose of mange a few years ago.

If it's sarcoptic mange, and it sounds like it is, then your dog will have to get a shot of Ivermectin, two weeks apart. The dog may also be prescribed steroids for short-term use to give the dog some relief until the mites begin to die off.

I can't actually tell you how expensive it will be for you but I live in Ireland and my dog had the same treatment that I have previously described, and it was a reasonable price.

Has anyone ever bought a marmoset from Cameroon?

I FOUND A PLACE WHERE THEY SELL MARMOSETS IN CAMEROON 1ST THEY WANT 900 THEN 700 THEN WHATEVER I HAVE THEN THEY HAVE TO SELL IT FROM THERE BREEDING GROUND BUT I GET IT AT A GOOD PRICE BECAUSE SHES THE ONLY ONE LEFT. 1ST THEY WANT THE WESTERN UNION MONEY OR RECIET THEN THEY WILL SHIP MY MONKEY. NOT IN A MILLION YEARS HAS ANYONE ELSE BEEN SCAMED THIS WAY? IS THIS SCAM?
Answers:
Yes, it's a scam. Take a look at the link for more information on pet scams like this. Plenty of folks have lost money to pet scammers -- don't be one of them!
Sounds like a scam - have you gotten any pictures? are they are reputable breeder? breeders usually would not lower the price that significantly - and i hope buying a marmoset is an impulse thing - they do require a lot of care and knowledge as to how to raise one.

Has anyone elses dog had heart worms?

If so, can you please tell me what to expect. My dog went for his regular 1 year check up yesterday and the results came back today that he's heart worm positive. I have to bring him in tomorrow morning for more blood tests.
Serious answers only please.
Answers:
Don't get worried yet. If your dog wasn't positive last year, he hasn't progressed very far in the disease. There are four stages of heartworm disease, one and two being the easiest to treat. There are a few different ways to treat this, but your vet will take an xray to determine what stage he is. Once he determines that, he will give you a suggested course of treatment. If by chance he advises you to do the arsenic injections, you will have to keep your dog extremely quiet with no activity at all for about four weeks. The reason for this is that the arsenic will kill the worms in the heart and activity may cause pieces of worms to break off into the blood stream. That would not be a good thing. Lots of dogs have done just fine with this. Just make sure you follow all your vets instructions meticulously. In future, he may also suggest that your dog take heartworm medication every month to prevent further infection.
my dog had 1 treatment after I found out and she lived for about 7 more years. Everything went fine for her. She ended up being 14 when she died.
Check out this website:

A friend was given a beautiful Doberman. The owners didn't tell him she had tested positive for hearworm. (We found out from checking with their vet. They didn't want the expense of treatment!) We found out during her exam and had her treated. Everything turned out great. She's a beautiful happy dog today.
Has your dog been on a montly heartworm preventative?
If you cannot afford $10 mo for heartworm prevention then you do not need the dog. Heartworms are very serious and with a VERY expensive treatment began immediately, there is still a very small chance of recovery and it is very hard on the dog. The best thing to do is to discuss your options with your vet once it has been determined the severity of his case. Good luck to you.
it is hard but with recent advancements it can be manageable. A lot depends on how early they caught it. It can be fairly expensive $500 - $2000 depending on how bad and the treatment. It will be hard on your dog and he will have to stay at the vet for a few days for treatments. You have to keep them calm and dont stress them out.

I know several dogs personally that came through with flying colors. One of my employee's dogs is currently being treated. My heart goes out to you and your puppy.

Good Luck
i have never had a dog with heart worms but i did work at an animal hospital for a few years and i saw a lot of cases of it. your dog will most likely be just fine as long as you follow your veterinarians advice. the treatment can be quite expensive though but definitely worth it. once your veterinarian does chest x-rays and lab work to determine if your dog is healthy enough to undergo the treatment then he or she will have you drop him off for the day and your dog will get an injection of ivermectin. he will be pretty sore at the injection site and might feel crummy for a day or two but after that, he'll be back to his normal self. once he comes home from the veterinarian's, you have to keep him as calm as possible. talk him out on a leash to use the restroom (don't just let him out in the yard to run around) and don't play fetch with him or anything. keep him as relaxed as possible. the dangerous part of the treatment is when the heart worms start dying, that is when he is most susceptible to having a heart attack, that's why it is so important to keep him calm. then you have to give him heart worm preventative every single month so he doesn't get infected with them again. good luck, i can imagine you are pretty worried.
petmedicinechest.com.it's an all natural web site. Also has customer service numbers to talk to someone about their products all day and night. The girls at my work swear by this web site. One lady had a rescued Great Dane. After spending sooo much money getting her healthy, she came back positive for heart worms. The medicine that the vet uses is so very strong and expensive to treat the heart worms. So she paid about $60 dollars and got some all natural wormer stuff from that web site. She had to give the pooch a tea spoon a day for about 2 months, and then she took the dog to the vet and the dog tested negative! All natural, no side effects, and inexpensive!

Other people at my work are using products from that web site and swearing by them! These are also all animal people with dogs, cats, horses, you name it, they have it, so I trust their opinion.
Good luck to you and ur pooch!
Heartworm is very serious. Please get your dog treated at the vet. Once treated you will have a healthy pet. But be sure to get preventative and give it once a month. Vets recommend year round. Do not forget to do this or you will be having a sick dog and it could die if your dog gets Heartworm again.

Has anyone else noticed that there r so many members on this sight that like to judge other members?

some people here r very quick to judge i couldent beleave the amount of members ( the top contributers) that r just out write nasty when answering peoples questions they seem to take every chance they can to tell u how very bad u r and how very good they r, maybe those people should think before passing judgement we cant all be perfect, on a lighter note there r so many helpfull members aswell that really do take the time to give helpfull answers which i think is great aftar all aint that what its all about?
Answers:
When you see all the ridiculous questions that are posted here day after day maybe then you will understand. Sure this site is suppose to help people but we are not talking about electronic gadgets in the dog section so at least some research should have been done before getting a dog or breeding one and no one should have to tell anyone to take their dog to the vet when they are really sick, that should be a given, but there are people here everyday looking for home remedies for serious problems with their dog. People treat animals with so little respect and they are after all living breathing creatures so they deserve better.
People's answer (especially top contributors) reflect the fustration they feel for the treatment these animals recieve. It is truly a shame that people put more research into their next cell phone than they do an animal.
some people are just happy doing that.. immature to us but cool for them =)
Sure. Like I'm judging you right now for spamming the Dogs section.
totally agree! every question ive asked someone has had to say something like why would you want to do that or thats stupid or something instead of giving advice. but thanks to everyone who has given good advice!!
yea they think it makes them look cool but just makes them lok stupid and stuck up.i am so glad there are people who notice this and actually give great answers!
Everyone here is of the human species.

And it's one of the human species' specialties, along with greed and jealousy.
We can probably all agree that spaying and neutering is responsable and the only way to cure the pet overpopluation problem. However, to ride someone asking a question about mating siblings about the responsibilites of spaying and neutering is just silly! Do they honestly think any dog owner older than two isn't going to know they should have their dogs fixed? Do they think the person asking the question is going to care what they think about their fitness as a "pet parent"? This was my first time here and because of the snotty nature of these posters it could be my last! Makes me think twice about posting or even visiting this site. Plenty of other question and answer sites out there!
I completely agree. If you're going to answer a question pretend like you were the one asking. Treat others how you would like to be treated is my philosophy.
I've noticed!! I think that there are so many imature people that think that they have all the answers. Believe me, half of them are wrong about everything. I think that if they don't know what they are talking about and cant say anything helpful they shouldn't be allowed to answer peoples questions. Plain and simple.
Yeah I noticed that too. Some people are just jerks and they have nothing better to do then go around dising people. Other's are caring and really do care and want to help people. I've only asked one question on here, but the answers were so varied. They were either kind, straight forward, which in most cases is good, as long as it isn't harsh, and just states facts, and others were just mean and really didn't need to be said, and would have been better left alone...I think that the last group of people shouldn't be on here, as it is rude. People come here to express there feelings privatly with, well, the world, but technically no one on here knows who they are. We need a combination of the first two types of people on here though. Sometimes we're sensitive and need some kind words that just skim over what we sould do, but we also need those kind, forceful words that let us know "hey. I really do need to do this!" So yeah. That's what I think anyway. For what it's worth. lol
What, like when they say your spelling is atrocious?
Have you ever noticed how many irresponsible pet owners ask questions they should already know the answers to BEFORE they get a pet or breed a pet? People on here asking questions when they should be on the way to the vet. Puppies suffering because people who bred their female do not know how to care for them or the mother. People buying dogs from breeders who will sell them at 5 weeks of age and younger. So many questions are very disturbing. You can't help but scream at someone to please hurry and get a clue.
It's difficult not to judge on many of the questions.
It takes all sorts to make a world, that's nothing new but why waste 5 points getting stressed about it? If there are answers you don't like, either report them if they're abusive or ignore them!
Well, this site is about asking other people's opinions and advice. I am sometimes shocked at the rude answers, too, but have to admit that they are only giving their opinion, which was asked for. I do agree that everyone could use a little tact and respect for others. But everyone has a right to their opinion on PetQnA.com , and everyone wants to voice it.
What's this got to do with dogs now?

Has anyone dyed a dog?

i died my poodle pink. shes so cute! shes a pink poodle. have you ever died your dog?
Answers:
I've never dyed me dog. But I did see that girl on My Super Sweet Sixteen on MTV dyed her poodle pink for her party.
No, but people are like "OMG that is so inhumane!!" Not like it hurts them, and the dye will come out later.
I hope you took the dog to the groomers for them to dye it pink.
yup! my poodle/cairn we dyed him with food colering and tye dyed him he was sooo cute. and it washed right out.
no.but it definately steals your dogs sense of self respect..
my neighbors got food coloring on their dog one easter and it didnt hurt her. i dont see anything wrong with it as long as its not PERMANENT. if its there just for a special occasion, no problem.
paris hilton probably
maybe jessica simpson
I can't dye my chihuahua because she's all black. but if I could I would. I think it would look soooooo cute. I also saw that epesode of my super sweet 16.
Yes, I just did this morning. I also dyed my bichon pink, using koolaid. She looks cute, and it didn't hurt her at all. All these people that say "no, don't do it"... Get a life.
Yes I used kool-aid to do it.
No but I have seen lots of died poodles! There is a couple near me with 1 purple and 1 pink standard poodle! I think it's pretty funny! So long as you use puppy dog dies that won't hurt them. Why not?
I have a male Shiht-zu and I have dyed him from pink, blue to green with kool-aid. Before he was a very shy dog, but when he was dyed, he got a lot of attention and really liked it. So the ones that say it takes away their self esteem are wrong. He digged the attention. And as far as him being pink, he was secure enough in his masculinity that he pulled if off exquisitely.
that's so lame.

Has anyone delt with Kennel cough with their dog? What did you do to treat it.?

I had boarded her and she didnt have the shot to prevent it, so the vet gave her one. Well she has it now, she didnt have enough time for the shot to work.
Answers:
as long as there not coughing up any flem antiobiotics do noting except please the owner. it takes 2 -3 weeks to run its course. Keep the animal away from any other animals as you know it is contageious
i have adopted three dogs from my local shelter and they all had it take it to the vets and they will give you antibiotics it will help good luck
There is usually a course of a cough suppressant and an antibiotic for 10-14 days. If you don't see improvement within several days, inform the office. Hopefully if it's caught early enough, it wont take too long. However, it can take several weeks to completely clear.
hopefully your dog is not too young. I had a poodle once that when put in the kennel young got kennel cough and he had asthmatic symptoms his whole life. But he kicked it for 14 yrs. and was in great spirits. Good luck.
First of all, antibiotics do nothing but help suppress the cough. Like the common cold, kennel cough passes in time.

Your vet will prescribe an antibiotic called clavamox. If they prescribe amoxicillin, ask them nicely for clavamox, as amoxi does not do the job here. You should have enough clavamox for 7-10 days giving it twice a day.

This normally kicks the cough in the butt. In some cases, it doesnt and then your vet should give you a stronger antibiotic called zithromax or azithromycin; enough for about 5 days. This has always worked in my experience.
Yes, my dog got it from my brother's puppy who was carrying it, but didn't have it. Just take her back to the vet and they'll give you medication for it. It should be gone in a week or two after you give her the medicine.
My lab and four of her puppies still at home and got kennel cough when we recieved our German Shepard back from a trainer. We took her to the vet where she had to go in through a back door because kennel cough is very contagious. The vet prescribed her and her pups medicine and gave them all a nasal spray at the office to prevent kennel cough for the next year. My advice is to take your dog to the vet and do what is required.
yes i took my dog 2 the vet and he gave me medicine 4 her

Has anyone actually gotten a puppy from PetFinders? Is it a good place to get one?

Answers:
They have a great reputation for treating the dogs very well. It's a good site to go on if you're looking for a very specific dog, such as a four year old male terrier who can live in an apartment and is good with kids. The more detail you put into the site, the better. I was just browsing the site when I wanted to get a dog because I didn't care the age, breed, or sex, and it was a lot harder to find a match. I didn't end up getting a dog from them for that reason.
I got my my German shepherd mix off petfinder.com. She is the most amazing dog I've ever had. It a great place to look because it is all dogs in local shelters in need of a good home.
Well I know tons of family and friends who found their dogs on Petfinder and I have found great dogs on there. My brother got both his huskies, my sister got her boxer and chow and my other brother found his Shepherd there. It is just an on line resource to locate excellent dogs from dfferent shelters and groups from all over. It is a great way to find a dog.
yes it is a good site to get dogs we got our husky off of there.
They list dogs in local shelters
My list of dogs, would be different than yours
Yes, a shelter is a good place to get a dog
I would Def use petfinder to find a homeless pet. i used petfinder for one of my dogs and both of my cats its a great way to see the animals in all the local shelters around you and to save a life!
I got a 6 week old mixed breed, shipped halfway across the country by an excellent shelter in MS (Corinth-Alcorn Humane Society). He is clean and healthy and has a terrific temperament. I would recommend trying to find a puppy that has not a) been abused or b) gone without food.
my sister did and that dog was a nightmare she got totally duped by the shelter cause he had a laundry list of things wrong with him . she ended up giving him to a rescue and she told the rescue what all was wrong with him and they still manage to place him . I am glad they placed him but she swore to me that she would never get another dog from petfinders . so instead she got one from the pound a little pomerainian and they are happily ever after . I am glad it turned out okay .

Has anybody used bark busters for their dogs problems?

if so did you get the results you wanted/needed?
Answers:
I have used them and the result were amazing. My dog was a serious jumper. She actually ripped my clothes from her jumping by the end of the first visit my dog was not jumping. I would highly recommend them.
I've never used them but have heard good and bad reports. I thinks they use a chain or a can filled with stones and throw it near the dogs feet to alarm them.
I've bought the electronic collar off ebay that has a high pitch squeal when the dog barks. It has worked on 2 of my 3 dogs that bark.
Not sure what a bark buster is but I used a collar that made a high pitched beep everytime the dog started a senseless barking spell and it stopped her.

Has anybody lost a dog?

cause there is a litle black dog that runs around in my neighborhood and she has a little growth on her back leg
Answers:
You should catch the dog and call your local shelter or animal control. Any one who has lost a dog will usually call these places to see if it's been found. You could also call your local vets. Sometimes people put up "lost dog" signs in their offices.

Is it wearing an identification tag?
no
Post ads on Craigslist.org and Petfinder.com. See if anyone local recognizes this dog. Maybe coax the dog to go with you to a vet clinic to have him/her scanned for a microchip.

Has anybody here bought a pet shop puppy?

if you have, could you please explain to me why you made that decision? Did you know that these puppies are from puppy mills? Are poorly bred? And will most likely have health issues when they get older?
Answers:
I have known many people who have boughten from pet stores.

1. they have had serious health problems as they got older. Some even before they got too old.

2. They do buy from puppy mills or "dog industries" which is a nicer name for a puppy mill.

if you notice when one dog is sold another dog replaces it practically the next day?

a normal breeder will not have the ability to restock the petstores that quickly. So they have to go to a mass breeder, puppy mill where they have puppies on hand, all year round, and enough to pick and choose from so the pet store has a "variety of dogs to offer" breed wise.

they wouldn't be able to do this without a puppy mill / mass breeder type setting.

I'd avoid pet store puppies as cute as they can be.

check the humane society or find a reputable breeder.

this isn't a slam to a petstore buyer- its the pet store, not the pet store buyer... but it is the truth.

I had a dog who lived to be 17... my friend had the same breed from a pet store that lived to be 10 and was constantly at the vet with health problems.

pet stores are not equip to handle the needs of puppies and sometimes puppies are not given enough play time, personal time, so on.

petstore puppies are also not always given the proper diet or feeding requirements.

many dogs they get are also too young to be separated from their moms which is what causes the health problems that they have.

I saw a dog that they claimed to be 6 weeks old (Which in itself is too young... and illegal in some states...) but I think it was younger than that even based on size, girth and teeth.
That's really not a fair question- quit trying to guilt people who got a dog from a pet shop.
People do not know about puppy mills, at least I hope that is the reason. It is up to the rest of us to educate them about what puppymills are and how they work hand in hand with petstores.
I have never bought a puppy from a petshop, but I think the majority of people that do really don't know where the puppies come from. I have seen multiple people say they got their puppy from a petshop and at the time, they had no idea what puppymills even were (and these people also vowed never to buy a petshop puppy again after they learned what the poor animals go through).
I was a 12 year old with an attitude and wanted a dog right then, right there. 6 years later I have a 6 year old Pekingese pup who made those 6 years VERY long! My mother didnt know about puppymills and to this day shes still all 'i dont care' about them, but now that I do .. of course I feel bad about buying him. I recently bought a 2nd dog and went to a VERY good breeder and checked out their facilty and everything.

Gizmo, my petstore dog, is 6 years old. Hes aggressive towards everyone outside of me and my mother. Chews on the ends of his blankets (a sign he was taken away from his mother too young), has an underbite/overbite, and had a hernia when we bought him, and also has a deformed rib. I LOVE gizmo, he was my first dog and will always have my heart. So far, hes very healthy and I'm SO greatful for that. He is on a good quality food (Innova) and is doing very well minus his puppymill faults.

He may go his whole life without having any health issues (minus the ones that come w/ old age), or maybe he will have health issues. But I was one of the lucky ones who petstore pup didnt die of parvo in a week.

So yes, my dog is a puppymill dog but I dont love him anyless than my good breeder dog. I learned from my mistake. Now I'M the one educating about puppymills at my local shelter.
I still go to the petstores and play with the dogs and let them know their loved. I admit that, but will NEVER buy another dog from a petstore because of what I know now. I can only HOPE that these pups dont end up back in those horrid conditions.
Yes, it was a bit more high scale than just a mall pet store. and no, he wasn't from a puppy mill, he was from a breeder, who I have the address, phone number, and name of. He's AKC registered and full blooded. I also have his whole family tree and all records they have of him. He was a bit pricey but I would've spent 10,000$ on him if I had to.
I don't think all pet stores are automatically bad. I think that's generalizing a bit.
I have not bought a puppy from a pet store, but I know plenty of people who have. There not like terrible dogs but they do seem to have more problems than dogs that were bred for show. For example: my neighbors dog has a problem of barking, jumping up and down incessantly and peeing when she meets new people. Although that could be her genetic background. I do know people that have bought dogs from pet stores and have had the puppy die a few months later because either there kidneys failed or they died of other complications which happened because of poor breeding. The people I know chose to buy the puppy from the pet store because they felt bad for it and wanted to save a life. if you were considering buying a puppy from the pet store; ask the owner if they know where the puppy came from. If they don't I wouldn't consider buying the puppy.
In 1986 I was 15 years old, shopping at the mall with my mom, and we walked by the pet store at the entrance to the mall and went in to look at the dogs. We weren't planning on it, but we bought the Pomeranian that they had there, and they held him until we were done shopping.

Now perhaps things were different way back then, it was 20 years ago after all, but my dog Willie was wonderful. He was nearly 15 when we had to put him down, and we fed him crap food from the grocery store. If we had known more way back when, maybe he would have lived longer.

Today, I would never purchase a puppy from a pet store because I know a whole lot more about the world, and I figure that I got lucky once, I would not take my chances again.
We bought our very first dog from a petshop.

Both hubby and I loved the look of the little Black Lab/Pointer cross. Neither of us knew anything about puppy mills and we were quite blue-eyed then. That was many many moons ago, and we have learned a lot in the meantime.

To top it up, the pups in the window were only 5 and 1/2 weeks old, much too young to be separated from their mum.

It was sheer luck that we got an absolutely wonderful dog, bold, strong, healthy, intelligent, one of the best dogs I have ever seen.

I would not buy a dog from a pet shop now, because it encourages an "industry" that should not exist.

My family once made the horrible mistake of buying a boxer puppy from Debby's PetLand. Less than 3 weeks after we got her, she died of heart problems. We did not do the proper research, and had no clue where these puppy's came from. All we saw were the adorable puppies pacing around in their little cages, and wanted to take her home. We ended up paying a large amount of money in medical bills, and after Debby's refused to reimburse us my mother had to threaten to bring this story to the media. But no sum of money can replace the emotional termoil we have been through.

Why me made the decision to buy from a pet shop? I guess we simply only saw the outside of the puppy --- the adorable eyes, floppy ears... --- and didn't even bother thinking about what may be going on inside of her... all of the medical issues that may come along with poorly bred puppies, bred in a puppy mill. And I'm sure it's the same with many other people. Like my family, a lot of people probably just think of taking these puppies home, and do not think ahead to the medical problems and emotional pain that lays ahead.
nope never hasd and never will they're to expensive there!
but i did get a cat form one. and it turned out to be the best pet u coulod ever have!

Has anybody had a dog live long when diagnosed with metastasize mammary carcinoma?

My lovely girl had a operation to remove a lump last week in her breast. She had not been ill at all and the lump was very small. We only noticed the problem as her teat started to bleed. I got her results two days ago and they say it is a metastasize mammary carcinoma. Bonnie is only five and was spayed when she was about 3 years. The operation has really been hard on her and us as she was so well before. My vet says it will travel to her lungs and theres nothing we can do.Please let me know if you have had this experience.I cant bear the thought of losing my girl.
Answers:
We have a yorkie that is still alive, but it hasn't been that long. She was used as a breeder and when she wouldn't get preganant anymore they dumped her and we got her. Yes they were breeding her and selling her pups with tumors bigger than her on her underbelly.
wow..I'm sorry. I hope your furry little friend is ok..I have never herd of this before but I just wanted to tell you to remain strong and to treat everyday as if it was her last and try to apend as much time with her as posible. that's what I would do.

good luck!!

Has anybody ever used Bil Jac dog food?

Answers:
There is a bil-jac plant near my hospital, whenever it rains everything stinks like dog food, but anyway back to the point. I have some clients who use it but with less than stellar results. Now is a tricky time due to all the contaminations but considering it from a health standpoint you will likely feed more food using bil-jac. Federal regulations stipulate how much protien food must contain, however they don't specifiy from where or how digestable it must be. There for cheaper foods use cheaper protien sources thereby requiring the dog to eat more food to get what they need, which they will do. Higher quality foods require smaller amounts of food to be fed.

Good luck
Yes it is a very good food, but should also be mixed with dry food. I use it and my dogs are healthy.
No, I wouldnt waste my money on that.

Invest in a high quality dog food.

Just look at the ingredients in Bil Jac ...

Chicken By Products (Organs Only, Including Chicken Liver), Chicken, Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Dried Beet Pulp, Brewers Dried Yeast, Cane Molasses, Egg Product, Salt, Sodium Propionate, (a preservative), DL-Methionine, L-Lysine, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Niacin, Biotin, Choline Chloride, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Thiamine Mononitrate, Chondroitin Sulfate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin B12 Supplement, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Manganous Oxide, Inositol, BHA (a preservative), Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Cobalt Carbonate, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Selenite.
I bought some for my corgi some years ago thinking I was getting him a treat. He took one look at it, turned his nose up and walked off.

I was just not that impressed with it myself, for all that it must be refrigerated and all that...
i tried it in a meatloaf once, but it wasn't that good.
yea my dog liked it but it gets bad really quick.and it should be mixed with somthin but it is not a must thing dogs will eat it how ever if they really like it,,

Has any one heard of Life's Abundant dog food?

I am ordering some today,And I just wanted to know if any one has tryed this dog food and what they thought of it.
Answers:
It is a very high quality dog food and it is made fresh when ordered to avoid preservatives. My dog have done excellent on it. You if go to their website there are comparisons of their food against some of the other major brands. They come out way on top as far as high grade ingredients.
yes it very very nice
no
It sounds like a good quality food..My own dogs couldn't eat it, as it has beet pulp. but many breeds are fine with beet pulp..
In my breed it causes calcium deficient rickets, but in other breeds, mostly the bully breeds, it causes excessive flatulence..If your dog is the one in the avatar, he/she should be fine with it..
Here is the ingredient list> http://www.dog-food-zone.com/dog-food-in...
Ive heard of it just online. It reads well but I dont have much experience with it. Some of the top foods you can feed your dog would be Natures Variety, Merricks, Wellness, Timberwolf, and Canidea. As long as it doesnt have any by-products, corn, and too many grains you should be ok.

Give this a read when you get a chance. This will show you the truth 95% of dog foods made.

Has any CoonHound Owners noticed that when they are on the trail their other senses dim?

When I walk my Bluetick coonhound he loves to smell the ground. I know that he is scenting anything that walked that way ine last day at least. I have seen him so keen on the trail of a squirrel that he didn't see the actual squirrel less than 3 feet away! I am just wondering if this is something specific to my dog or if other hound owners have seen this happen.
Answers:
It is like they zone everything else out and just focus on the scent. They have been bred to act that way so that they will not get distracted and loose the scent.
I have beagles and they definitely seem to go into a zone of their own when on a scent. They don't lose their quarry, though. But they sure can't hear ME.
It's worse with Bloodhounds. The nose goes down and they are totally oblivious to the world.

Handled Wayward Kids Badly?

I was out with my son and our large Belgian Shepherd dog the other day and whilst my (3 year old) son and I were wrestling I saw three of the children from our council estate approach us. These kids are not particularly bad, but they're the kids whose parents don't know or care where they are.

Well, they came right up to us and pointed to our dog. He's a big pup and was on his looong training line at the time.

"What is it?" asked one.

"HE is a Belgian Shepherd." I replied, emphasising the "He". My tone was annoyed as I really didn't want them to be there near us in the park at all.

"How old is it?" the same kid asked.

"He's a living thing." I replied, more annoyed, "The ball there is an 'it'."

They thought about that then another asked if they could pet him. I agreed. Another kid kept me talking and next thing I knew one of them had the football out of our bag and was about to kick it.

I think you handled it correctly. Unfortunately you can't do much about other people's unsupervised children. You were firm, but fair.
You did alright.
I think you did fine. A bit short with them but fine in all!
I think you handled it fine. As someone else said, you can't do much about others unsupervised children who probably have no respect for any animals.
A typical stereotypical approach to what u describe as 'wayward' kids. To be stereotypical is human and we all hold certain views despite trying not to. The children you describe did nothing against you initially (or throughout the situation you describe) and yet immediately you had an 'annoyed' tone to your voice simply because they said 'it' and not 'he'. Its obvious you want to change your attitude and in future I would recommend that you give these kids a break, it seems in our society that once mud has been thrown it sticks, and no-one will go out of their way to try and change this and give people a go!

Well done for admitting this and trying to change your attitude, just stop and think next time and give them a break after all the children are our future!

:-)
Sure, you may have been a little short with them, but they were unsupervised, so they must learn that not everyone wants them to come up and play with their dog. I would have done close to the same.
one of two ways, one be honest and tell them you would rather not, or two, tell them that he doesn't like strangers
even thought the kids might of thought you were annoying, you handled them alright. they shouldnt be so rude and you are a great parent. i have a friend who's parents didnt teach her many respectful rules so she takes things!!! i told her that it was bad and i felt bad, but i am glad i did, because she doesnt do it as much anymore.
in your situation, of course, you might feel bad now, but i am sure you feel better when you relize you did the right thing.
I think you did fine, dealt with the situation without causing an argument or any problem...What more could you want?
As all said you handled it well. But just remember when handling these children from the neighborhood, Some day your boy will be old enough to go to the park with his friends and might get bullied because the kids feel you are a bully. Also if you pup ever did get away from you, your gonna want those same kids to be nice and bring him home safe and sound.

Next time I would just tell them that you were getting ready to leave. Then you could walk farther into the park or around the park and then continue to play with your boy and pup.
A lot of great points have been made. I don't think you did anything wrong. However, we need to remember whose fault it is when kids are rude, unsupervised, ill informed etc. Not the kids fault.

I see a lot of rude kids, or not very considerate kids at least, and I think "I would love to smack your parents!", not the kids. You did try to educate them that a dog is a living being. They may have never had it presented to them that way before. "It" comes from their lack of knowledge.

Remember, we learn what we live. If their parents toss them to the streets, imagine how they must treat a dog!?

Being firm is good too though. You set boundaries and stuck to them. Excellent!

I have worked with inner-city toddlers who were never told "No" in their lives, not because they were spoiled, but because their parents didn't care enough to even do that much. Kids need boundaries and respect those who give them. Be firm, set boundaries, but REMEMBER, it's not their fault they are the way they are.

Keri
I would have told them "No" as soon as they asked to pet the dog.But I don't think you handled the situation badly at all.
dO WHAT i do say firmly please DONT TOUCH THE DOG and then walk away!

Sorry to rain on you parade, honey, but nothing is free.

Especially a pom.
They are very expensive, 800-3000.
If you can't afford it, no pom for you.

Try the local pound, and save a life!

Morris: Sorry, but petfinder dogs, are not free. They still have an adoption fee.
Once again I will say No one gives away free puppies! If they do they are usually sick or aggressive.

Remember the breeder have had to pay vet bills during the pregnancy. May a couple of thousand dollars if a c-section was needed which is often the case with small dogs. Also extra food and vitamins for the monther. Food and first shots for the puppies as well as worm medication and vet care if needed. It's not unreasonable to think a litter of pups can cost $3,000 or more through pregnancy until they go to their new homes.

Especially small ones. Yes try the pound or Petfinder. You will find a lovely pup for probably between $50-$200. A snip of a price seeing they will be spayed/neutered already.
Pomeranians are expensive .maybe a kennel or a cross breed would be better.hope you find one affordable.
I think fostering a dog is free but I highly disapprove of receiving free puppies. Tell you why. A really good place to purchase or/and adopt a dog is from a breeder or an animal shelter. The average price essential for purchasing a dog ranges from $300-1000. And those bargains that are less than that aren't worth it because it is highly probable that the dog-mill bred and raised dog is deathly sick with various and numerous ailments and poorly house trained and/or people trained (optional). It's well known that dogs from pet mills, due to the dirty conditions and uncompassion in regards to the dogs wellbeing, that it is very sick with ailments which are often incurable but treatable with expensive heavy medication, which can tear a gap on your pocket. Don't be fooled by those pet shops because about 95% of all managers who maintain their pet shops purchase those apparently healthy cute and happy puppies from pet mills because they're so cheap! Disregarding animal rescue, your local dog shelter and breeder are the ones that truly care about where it is best suitable for their dogs to find that TLC. Usually they are very hesitant to allow you to adopt/ purchase a dog right away because you're a stranger to them. When you notice that fact and that they like to ask questions about your financial stability, job security, and other basic questions such as why do you want to get this particular breed? and why dogs in general? is your personality and lifestyle best suitable for your dogs needs...that's substantial evidence that they truly care about their dog. They ask those questions to make sure that although you promise to provide a loving home to the pet, you don't send it to the overpopulated animal shelter around the corner 2 weeks later. Some of them go to even extreme measures to force you to sign a contract, mandating that you provide your dog with a loving home for at least a couple of months and then you have to return it back to the breeder. Not all breeders do that but look for other obtruse signs that confirm their compassion for dogs. Check to see if the breeder is a member of pet owner organizations, such as the American Kennel Club or something similar and make sure it is valid. But if you can't seem to resist that bargain, make certain that retrieve documents about the dog's medical history and if they have received all of their vaccinations up to date. Prove that they are valid by a veterinarian. If the bargain benefactor refuses to present those papers, that's a sign that the dog potentially is sickly with numerous and various ailments. Learn more information that I possibly may have overlooked from an animal shelter, veterinarian and staff and the dog owner community. And via the Internet, I heard that http://www.petfinder.com/ is very resourceful in finding healthy dogs of all types of breeds. One more thing, the biggest scam that imminent dog owners encounter is when they purchase a dog across the shore. Although those papers may be valid, on numerous occasions, you may never retrieve the dog. Or if you do, they manipulate you by deliberately granting you custody to the wrong dog, a mixed breed, or a look-alike. And don't be fooled. Even breeders are money-hungry self-centered tricksters! I would trust animal shelters more. For more information, get advice from animal rescue, a veterinarian and staff, dog owners, and animal shelters.

Haircut or no? Which is more soothing?

My JRT/Westie mix has adorable wafts of curls that make her a shaggy dog that I love and adore. Of course if we don't brush her everyday, it just sorts of mats down. Today is the first really hot day and she seemed in hog heaven that I was brushing her at lunch.

Should she get a summer haircut? Should she be cut regularly to keep the hair out of her eyes? (It kind of curls up in front of her eyes a bit from her nose/jowels).

I love my shaggy dog but I want her to be cool and comfy. Does it really make a big difference in that type of coat (semi-wirey).

Here's a pic: http://files.dogster.com/pix/dogs/91/418...
Answers:
You can keep the curls, but keep her brushed out so the air can get to her skin. If you do cut her short, be careful of sunburn.

You can take her to a professional groomer and have the pads of her feet trimmed and her eyes and her belly, she'll be cooler but still have hair. She could also get a long haircut so she has hair, but not too long and it can have shape.

Wire coats do stay cooler than double thick coats. Any dog benefits from brushing. I'd brush her daily if you want her to keep her hair. Brushing also helps you spot problems before they become bad...ticks, sores, hot spots...etc...
if it is hot where you live, you should. if you don't, your dog could have a heat stroke.
i would just clip her hair a little bit
Awwww! She is a sweetie! I think this is totally up to you. If she seems really bother by the heat then yes get a trim. But I do really like the shaggy dog look myself.
Cute pup, I think I would leave the hair on, I am sure your dog loves the attention of being brushed. I might trim the hair around the eyes if it is going into the eye itself. Short haired dogs can sun burn the longer hair should work as protection but your dog is a house dog so if you can handle the heat your pup should be able to also.
I think she should not get a haircut. Well, for the summer...? I would wait a little while longer until it gets warmer, then give her a little trim. not so shaggy looking, but not really short. Cute dog by the way! I have a small Bichon Frise named Mia.
Oh my gosh sooo cute...I ahve two westies myself Oliver and Maddie ...dad and daughter...anyhow I had the same delema...Maddie has curly soft hair and I just had them to the groomer...I asked If I should just shave them since it gets so hot where we spend our summers...we have a boat so summers are very hot on deck...the groomer saidshe would do the classic westie cut and gave them a short skirt...while both dogs got the same haircut...maddies hair is curlier so she looks shorter...anyhow get a long westie cut...they do not have to cut all of their hair off and I do think they feel and see better after a trip to the groomer...
Actually dogs don't lose heat like humans. They don't sweat they pant and lost heat through their pads. So getting her cut is really up to you and how you want her to look. She probably loved the attention and feel of the brush, it's good bonding time.

Hair Loss on a dog?

My Pug has one long bald spot about 4 inches long by 1/2 inch wide on her stomach. and a little it of bald under her "armpits" no where else. Is this caused from a nutrient deficentcy? What would cause this? Any input would help thanks.
Answers:
your dog could have a problem with it's thyroid. my dog started losing hair and they told me it was her thyroid. they have medication to control that. they also put my dog on vitaims as that helped her. I bought a product called Healthy Coat and my dogs hair came back in very nicely. you can get it at petsmart.
u might want to take him to the vet but my cat had that problem and they said it waz allergies lol.
allergies possibly. Could be environmental or food. If your dog is older id get it thyroid checked. Are there any signs of parasites?
It could be mange or ringworm (which is not really a worm, but is a fingal infection like jock itch or athlete's foot). You may need to take her to the vet to have her skin examined. They may need to do a skin scrape and check it under a microscope or do a fungal culture.
Hi!
Have you noticed you dog scratching or bieting himself? He could be bieting/scratching the hair off. Does he have fleas? That is what my dogs did when he had fleas. He chewed almost all the hair off his leg from being so itchy! If none of these things apply to your dog, call or go to your vet.
Good luck! :)
SEE YOUR VET!
sometimes when dogs have fleas or ticks they start losing their hair. have you noticed any scratching? the best thing is for you to take your dog to the vet and get her checked out.

Hair growing back?

I have a dog that is very furry. Some of her hair on the top of her head has rubbed off. It is not bald, but broken off I guess you would say. How can I get it to regrow?
Answers:
she probably has a skin condition, or possibly allergies. you should take her to the vet to get it treated, then the hair will probably grow back on its own after the condition is treated.
First, take her in for a checkup at the vet's office to make sure it's not a disease or a parasite, etc.

Work on nutrition. Try adding fish oil to her kibble and/or increase the quality of the foods she eats. There are some good supplements that can be added to her food to help re-grow lost hair.
Take her to the vet. Unless she spins on her head like a top she shouldn't be losing hair.

Don't laugh, I have seen dogs spin on their head.

Or, is there a door you keep closed that she wants to get through? My dog rubs his cheeks along the skirts of my sofas.
Depending on the type of coat your dog has, it may take an entire growth season to regrow new hair that has been broken off. Some dogs have "hair" that grows continually, others have "fur" that grows in cycles.
first you must find out why the hair on her head has rubbed off?? then and only then you can try to fix the problem

Ha ha i got it!! i know the name for my new pup..?

ok.. most of you picked T-bone..i actually said it first my b.f loved it then i was iffy about it.. i just made me giggle everytime i said it..lol..but i think im going to go with it.. but for a nick name.. ill call him " mister T " what do you think?cute for a nickname? i can get some gold bling bling for him too..lol

and thanks for all of you who answered..crazy names you suggested and all.. i really liked sumo. but most of you were right..that is for a big dog like a english bulldog or a mastiff
Answers:
Haha, I think that's very unique...For a dog anyways.lol.I like it. Good on you for not going for the the usual 'Butch' or 'Fido'.
No, it's stupid to get it for a mastiff, then it actually fits him. It's cute if you call him sumo, because it's ironic. But I really do like mister T cute nickname. But please don't be one of those dog owners that dresses up her dog, it humiliates the dog, and it's very easy to tell.
cute! what breed? Sumo is CUTE too for a tiny little breed, sort of ironic. It would be funny.
I suggest Luna if it's a girl dog but if it's a boy dog than I would prefer Artemis.
i think of a mohawk and gold chains, with full body biker suits when i say mister "t"...i dont like it, but as long as u like it... thats all that matters =]
ya i like it but you could also call him Mr. Barkyvonshnowzer like in that commercial i love it i laugh everytime i hear it
your dog if you cute! you should name it t- bone and call it T

Guess the breed(s)?

We had this dog for 12 yrs before she passed away recently. I always considered her a bonafide mutt. I figure it'd be fun to see if anyone can throw out any ideas of breed(s) she may have had in her.

We call these purebred Michigan Black Dogs.
It's a Lab and Border Collie mix. I'm sorry about your loss. They are usually fantastic dogs.
border collie mix

or possible husky lab mix or husky border collie mix,
she looks like a german sheppard mixed with a lab and some others
Chow?
BORDER COLI WITH HUSKY OR GOLDEN RETRIEVER OR JUST COLLI MIX
She looks like a German Shepherd %26 Chow Chow to me. The Chow Chows ears perk up like that, so do the German Sheps too. Sorry about your loss, she lived a good while though.
austrailan cattle dog/border collie mix
lab, boder collie, huskie?, shepard
I see Chow in this dog and very likely some Border Collie or Austrailian Cattle Dog (blue heeler)
Maybe Chow/Lab.. Very sweet eyes. I'm sure she was a sweetie. Sorry for your loss;^(
I would guess that she had some black lab in her and maybe some shepard. But she only weighed 35 pounds then maybe sheltie, although I had a friends that had a shepard that was shepard and collie mix and she was rather small. So hey what do I know. Just a guess anyway.
Definately got some chow in there, and probably border collie. She looks like a real nice girl. Sorry for your loss.
looks like she might of been mixed w/blue heeler maybe?
Is it Lab and Border Collie mix.
akita, irish setter, chihuahua (very far back on the family tree), terrier, lab, some other breeds. Sorry for your loss.

Guess the breed!! What breed of dogs are these puppies?

Okay, well I got two new puppies. I am trying very hard to figure out what breed these pups are, the guy I got them from told me, but Im not sure if he was right or not. So after I get some responces ill tell you all what. I just want to see what you guys think without having the thought of what they might be affecting your judgment. I posted on another forum, and they all pretty much saying the same thing, so thought id let people guess here and see what they come up with :) Also would you say there littermates, or not?
PS, they may be purebred and they might be mixed.

I think they look like staffy x Jack russells.

Whatever they are they are very cute and are lucky to have been rescued, they look to be in great condition for ones that have had such a rough start to life. Congratulations.
I'm not sure on all dog breeds, but I'd say they look like a mix between Jack Russell's and Boxers. (Is that possible?!) They do look like littermates to me as well. The ears, eyes and build do it for me, but hey I could be wrong. First wild guess of the night. how'd I do? lol
The white one looks like a jack russell. The dark one looks like a boxer/ pit bull.
the white one looks like a jack russel
im not sure on the brown one.

but they are very cute!!
Jack Russells! Although the brown one might be mixed with something...like maybe pitbull? They are adorable!
if i had to guess i would say that they are terrior mix or maybe beagle mix. yeah i can see that they may be related mainly in the faces. although the brown one does show some signs of pit but not enough to be possitive
Jack Russell or feist litter mates mixed
The white one looks a lot like a jack russel... and the brown looks like it has boxer in it.
I would say jack russel crossed with fox terior. I think they look the same age, and are probably from the same litter? can I ask why you are doubting the breeder?
One looks like a Jackrussel mix and the other a boxer mix. Litter mates can have different fathers so it is possible for them to be two different breeds. When a female is in heat, she ovulates a few eggs on different days, so she can mate with a jack russel one day, and a boxer another day, and there you have litter mates from different daddies!!!
I don't think that they look like the same breed at all.
What this means is that the owners of the mama are REALLY irresponsible to allow 2 different males to mate with her.
Sheesh - when will people learn to fix their pets or watch them closely! At least you got two cute pups from it!

Oh, by the way, some answeres are saying their faces look the same! NOT!! One has a pointly muzzle while the other has a blunt muzzle. One has a smooth forehead and the other is a tad wrinkly like a boxer. Totally different baby daddies! Or, on the off chance, one just takes after their mom, and the other after their dad.
Who cares! I love them!

) I'll go with the majority, boxer and jack russell)
Aww very cute puppies! YEah i would say def. jack russel for one and boxer for the other color and face look anyways but i doubt it is maybe just the same jack russel or a terrier group. They are very cute though.
I agree - different daddies.

white one is definitely jack russell mix or similar small terrier mix

brown one is anyone's guess. Lots of pups have the wrinkly forehead, but it's very common in boxers and APBTs too. Because of size, I'd also want to mention feists (patterdale terrier).

If you really want to know, have them DNA tested for breed. The test is like $70.
pink collar jack russell or rat terrier but i would lean toward jack russell

blue collar boxer or boxer mix.

you didn't give ages so it's hard to tell if they're littermates or not. not enough info there. but since a litter can have different daddies, yes and no is my answer on that.

they're both cute.

ps. looks like your boxer might need to be dewormed. :)
Very cute - you have your hands full!

I'm guessing the lighter one is a JRT mix and the brown one is a Boxer/terrier mix. I highly doubt they are purebred.
I think they look like half pit bull, or half boxer, with maybe hound or lab in them. Its hard to tell without knowing their age and seeing how big they really are. They are totally cute though
Your white one looks like a Jack Russel mixed with Rat Terrier. The Brown looks like a Pitt or Lab mixed with Boxer. Probably different litters.

Cute dogs, they have shiny coats!!!
I think they look like litter mates. Their both basically the same size/age. It's really hard to tell what breed they are when their puppies - they all look the same to me! But I don't think the white one is a Jack Russel, even though he has the markings, he seems already too big to be one? I once had a whippet some people would swear was a jack russel from photos because of his marking - he was a pure breed! :P

But the only thing that matters is ... their extremely cute! They must be a real handfull - good luck :)
They both look like Jack Russell mixes. Maybe with a Staffy or Pitbull? It's hard to tell - are they related? Anyway, both look adorable - especially the pup in the blue collar ;-)
I agree the white one looks like a jack russel mix, and the brown one looks just like my dog when he was a puppy! My dog is Am Staffordshire/rotti cross. I don't think it looks like a "pit". "Pits" have more white and pink on their faces.

Am I anywhere near right with guessing a wheaton terrier cross?
It looks like a poodle mixed with an old english sheep dog (poor poodle, lol)
spoodle or a doodle? - you know anything with "doodle" in its name isnt actually a breed.. right?

could be a poorly bred Portuguese Water Dog or irish water spaniel *lol*

Broodle griffon
Poo-Shi
Poovanese
"Mutt"

Guardian dog??

Which of these dog breeds are the best guardians: Presa canario ,Fila ,Rottweiler or Doberman pinscher.
Please sort them from the best to worse.
Answers:
There's no one breed that's the best guard dog. A dog is what you make it - you need a dog with a stable temperament from a reputable breeder, the rest depends on the quality of his training. None of these dogs should be owned by someone with no dog experience.
be careful when you get your dog not trained right any dog can be dangerous. My homeowners will not let us have a rott or dobie which tells me they can both be bad to get. If you have small children keep that in mind when picking your dog.
It is not the dog you choose it is the way you treat your dog if you just put them in a yard and show no love they are not going to protect you if you show your dog love they will die for you
Rottweilers in my opinion are the best guardians. I use to have 2 Rotties and they were the most compasionate dogs in the world when it came to protecting their territory. They never bit anybody but they scared the bajesus out of them when someone tried getting in our yard. Somebody tried climbing our fence and getting into our house and they didnt know we had a Rottweiler. Needless to say the dog got the guy cornered until someone from my household got outside.
I think the Dobermen Pinscher
Doberman pinscher DEFIANTLY!!!!!!...
The presa canario is a viscious and unpredictable breed, they are contrary to peoples beliefs dangerous to be around.Rotts are next,Most Dobermans are wimps when you get down to business,Filas..well not too smart. If you want a loyal smart and very protective dog try a Belgian Malanois.I have one that was a washout Academy dog(security training) she is the best watchdog I have ever had.Not too good with strangers or kids though. You need to keep an eye on them.
I'd say that just based on physical potential, the list would be a tie between Presa canario and Filo Brasileiro, then Doberman then Rottweiler. But, it really depends on the dog's training and desire to protect. From this perspective, the list would probably be Doberman, then Rotweiler, then Presa and Filo.
All dogs respond to how they are raised...we had a Rot that was such a big baby with family and friends but, when it came to "sensing" strangers intentions...he was very good! We had a guy knock on our door late at night (in the county) claiming to have car troubles and the dog must have known that the guy was "shady" because he just sat there and gave the guy his "I mean business" growl through the screen door...anyway, the next day, we found out that houses had been broken into on our road!! Good guard dog? I think so!! :)
Why ? What will you do w/this dog??? If you aren't going to make it a part of your family and train it extensively you have NO need for a dog like that. If you want a junk yard dog why not pay for an alarm system. Too many people are harmed by dogs that an owner lets get out and bite or kill someone. I have one of the dogs you describe and I am penalized because of the owner of one turned it into a vicious animal. These dogs are meant to be family dogs...NOT KILLERS
All of these dogs are capable of being excellent guardian dogs. The downside to them is if they aren't trained and socialized properly then they can have serious behavior issues.
Have you considered a great pyrenees? I'm just going to assume that you want a pet to become a member of the family, not a lawn ornament. Just fair warning: It would be cheaper, easier, more dependable, and less stressful if you just got an alarm system.
-OK, this should answer your question, looks long, but goes quickly. This is something I wrote before, I give it to people to read alot and get ALOT of best answers (Im not saying that to make you give it to me, Im just letting you know how good it is so you read it!) and has alot of info, It would just tell you everything I want you to know but more-

Dobermans are the best! there are not enough words for me to discribe how good a doberman is. Im always saying the same thing over and over agian to people, but a Doberman is the MOST AFFECTIONATE DOG EVER. I have worked in the circus since I was a baby and so did my family for 5 generations, and I have volunteerd at animal shelters and no dog can add up to a dobie. I have lived with them allll my life. And my dad trains them, and he taught me.
Now i currently have one, bc my dad lives in spain when he came to visit, he took me to a shelter and we adopted the one i have now, Hammer.
But any-whoo.. A doberman is not dangerous unless you abuse it, or treat it wrong for example, hitting him, ignoring, screaming at them abusivly, purposuly abusng him, and ect ect. As with any dog, they would become angry and not take it anymore, and snap back. But for NO reason EVER will a dobe attack its owner for no reason. And when you get a dobie, its all on how you raise it. Keeping it isolated from people and other animals will make it become afraid. let me tell you a bit about dobes!

They were "invented" for Guarding by a man who was a tax collector in Germany, named Louis Dobermann (short 1"N"). Who needed a dog to protect him in his runs accross town to collect taxes in the "scummy" neighborhoods. So He hand picked dogs like
The Rottweiler- was used in the development of the breed due to its massiveness and intelligence. This very solid dog also possessed great stamina, and had excellent tracking ability. Sometimes the Rottweiler strain can be seen in a Doberman with a "wavy" coat.
The Old German Pinscher (now extinct) - Black and tan, smooth coat, and energetic. Alertness and aggressiveness
The Beauceron- contributed size and color to the Dobermann bloodline. The Beauceron was a solidly built dog, very alert, and was known to be intelligent as well.
Sporting Dogs- was used to lengthen the head - attentive, loving, and territorial.
Weimaraner - Points, retrieves, good nose for tracking. Possible introduction of the gene for producing the blue Doberman.
Blue Dane - Ferocious - used for boar hunting.
English Greyhound - Would account for the black in color, additional height, stamina, and the speed of the Doberman. They do not have to be trained to guard their family and they are very Intelligent, Dobermans are the smartest breed of dog, you can look it up if you dont believe me. Them, and the german shepherd breed are both popular in shtuzund but dobies excel in it more then any breed, and the doberman was invented with all these breedes so that they can perform ANY job.The AKC quotes them as " Compactly built, muscular and powerful, for great endurance and speed. Elegant in appearance, of proud carriage, reflecting great nobility and temperament. Energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient. " and also "The properly bred and trained Doberman has proved itself as friend and guardian, As is developed, its qualities of intelligence and ability to absorb and retain training brought it into demand as a police and war dog." http://www.akc.org/breeds/doberman_pinsc...

Also, you wouldn't be sorry. They dont shed, they are VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY easy to train because of their intelligence, Extremly humorus!! Their Bark is very intimidating, and their bite is worse ONLY when needed, When trained properly. Also they are VERY Affectionate, ask any Dobe owner and they will tell you. All Breeders and dog experts will also tell you that they get their nicknames, "velcro" dogs for being soo affectionate. They love to follow you everywhere, make you laugh and please you. They love children and animals as with any other dogs, when they are familiar with them or just not afraid, or if an abused dobe, or any other dog for that matter you dont know for a fact or not, if they have problems.
Dobermans and other dogs only get bad reps becuase of the stupid idiots behind them.

If your looking for a guard dog (property) then maybe a fila or rottie, I have found though, that dogs don't protect something that means nothing to them. So keep that in mind on how you treat your dog. If your actually looking for a protection (you, your body) then the doberman is it. They are extremely intelligent and intuitive, and whoever said before that they are wimps was a tard and has never seena shutzhund trial w/ dobies... I have two and although they are friendly with most people they can be down right scary when they feel it's necissary. Dobermans have a powerful bark as well as bite, contrary to popular belief all dogs have about the same bite strength even pitt bulls some are just bred to either ignore the pain and latch on like a APBT or to never ever bite down like a Golden retriever (goldens were breed to NOT BITE DOWN which is why they arent' biters). Both of mine have the sharpest teeth of any dog i've ever been around though, they have a ridge that i swear is razor sharp. It sounds as if you want a serious dog, I would try checking out house of Hoytt @ Hoytt.com if you are interested in a protection dog. You can get a WELL BRED puppy with extensive training there. And for your needs I recommend protection training by a licenced professional even though most dobermans don't need any protection training since it's what they were bred for. But one definate word of advice for any prospective dobie owner. They WILL NOT protect you or your property if they don't care about it. Dobies are very clingy, needy dogs, they like nothing more than to be with their people, preferably touching them. They aren't the best "guard dogs" and are better at "protection" because they are usually INSIDE dogs. They aren't happy outside wich does you no good.

As far as the Presa Canario, I wouldn't consider it. I'm not into breed bashing but it's not a safe dog to be around yourself honestly unless you have extensive dog training knowledge and know how to protect yourself from a dog attack. and trust me you don't want your dog actually killing someone, (maiming in the interest of protection maybe, but not killing)...

For guard dogs you might also consider one of the belgian shepard breeds or a mastiff breed such as the boerboel (i've heard they are GREAT guard dogs.)
