Heartworm testing?

how much does heartworm testing normally cost??
Answers:
Most vets usually do heartworm testing as a routine part of a yearly exam along with vaccines.
By itself, probably around $25, give or take, in addition to the exam fee.
If you do nothing else for your dog, please have him on heartworm prevention. This, along with rabies vaccine, are two very very important part of keeping your dog healthy. Heartworm disease is eventually fatal, and SO easy to prevent.

***Response to haha's comment..
Wait until your dog is diagnosed with heartworm disease and you have to watch him die a horrible suffering death.
This disease is common and DEADLY. How can you say that preventing it is a waste of money?? Anytime you can prevent your pet from getting a deadly disease, how can that be a waste of money??
general cost varies from clinic to clinic.

we charged $26.

however- no matter the cost- its less expensive to keep up on testing for heartworms and getting proventative treatment than it is for treating a heartworm problem (Which can be expensive, and for the pets- sometimes deadly).

So its well worth the money.

it generally falls between 20 and 30 $$'s tho

as for "haha"'s answer- Tell that to the dogs I watched suffer through the treatment, and the ones that were euthanized due to owners who thought the same thing as "haha".

its not a common disease- but that's because its so easily preventable. But in the same essence, it IS a common disease because its so eaily catchable if not treated. It works both ways. You just see less cases because the majority of owners are responsible enough to get preventative care.
the vet clinic i work at charges $25.00. its a simple test that will require a small blood sample and the results will be ready in less than 10 min.
I believe it varies from vet to vet as well as varies depending on which type you choose to get (a smear from a blood sample on a microscope slide, or an IDEXX snap test - the snap is most accurate). You could call around to the different veterinarians in your area and check the prices.
That depends on the area that you live in. I work for a vet and we charge $21.
Heartworm testing is waste of money and is just another way for the vet to scare you into spending extra money on testing that isn't needed. The odds of your dog getting heartworms is minimal.
It's very important to make sure your dog does not have heartworms if she's never been tested before, and keep her on preventative year. It's much cheaper, and better for your dog, to do this than to have to treat heartworms. If cost is a major issue for you, you may want to contact your local shelter or Humane Society, they may be able to test your dog for less than your area veterinarians.
