Have you ever given ALPRAZOLAM to your dog?

Hi, I previously asked a question about my dog being scared of thunderstorms.

My vet prescribed Alprazolam 1MG.

She said the side effects are rare, and that the drug acts quickly.
What I would like to know from those of you who give the same anti-anxiety pills is how the dogs react. Just so I can have an idea.

Thank you!
Answers:
1 mg of alprazolam? That is a huge dose for a dog! Is the dog a very very big dog or something?
The alprazolam should work and calm the dog down but be careful you don't use it too often or the dog could end up addicted to the drug and suffer withdrawal symptoms etc. Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine.
Cant say that i have. dont know if i would either.
I don't use it currently, but have in the past on pets that i've taken care of. It ususally makes them very lethargic and very thirsty. It can help if your dog is extremely scared of thunder, but there are other more homeopathic remedies out there if your pet is only mildly upset. i.e. Calmz , most of these remedies use valerian root for a calmer.
This is generic for Xanax. Some behaviorists are using Clomicalm http://www.clomicalm.novartis.us/... for separation anxiety. Find a good veterinary behaviorist and have your dog evaluated. A friend of mine has her German Shepherd male on Elavil, which is Amitryptaline for dominance issues, and it has helped him a ton.
